This morning we continued to discuss the history of modern day humans with a video about our dispersal from Africa: https://youtu.be/xmboVmtqNJc?list=PLi6K9w_UbfFSxHPEDWcXxIxSA6gDR4OeZ. We also completed a short science activity called "dancing fruit" with dried cranberries, tap water, and carbonated water. When placed into the soda water the dried fruit will drift up and down as the carbon-dioxide molecules attach to the fruit and then as the gas leaves the water the fruit will fall back down. The fruit sinks and remains at the bottom of the glass of tap water.
Arianna continued working on her Web Quest about Lewis and Clark and his expedition west. Throughout her quest she will learn and document information about the expedition. She added pages to her Google Slide journal that included the supplies collected, people that accompanied her on the trip , and the funds used for the trip.
Arianna and I focused on using the common method to multiply 2-digit by 2-digit numbers, which she grasped today, and was able to complete problems independently. Then, Arianna answered 4th grade course challenge questions on Khan Academy consisting of adding mixed numbers, adding fractions with unlike denominators, and dividing by multiples of 10. She finished with a mental math minute and a quick quiz on representing data in graphs.
Arianna practiced using compare and contrast within a text and answering literal/inferential questions about a text on the ReadingEggspress website. She also practiced spelling words with -ing endings using the doubling rule. She continued reading "City of Ember" and making notes on her organizer. Today, we discovered another layer of meaning within this story. The author describes the city as a light in the darkness, and she questions the meaning of life itself.
Arianna continued working on her WebQuest about Lewis and Clark and his expedition west. Throughout her quest she will learn and document information about the expedition. She will navigate various websites to identify various aspects of the journey including: where and when they traveled, who they met, and their discoveries. Using the information, she will learn how to use Google Slides and create an online journal using Google Slides.
Solo #1 and Lesson #4 from Alfred's Snare Drum Method Book 1
Lesson Outline
We reviewed Lesson 3 by playing the combination study for it, and then we began working on Solo #1. We worked on the intro and first section of the solo, and then played the exercises and combination study for Lesson 4 on combining quarter notes, quarter rests, eighth notes, and eighth rests.
Assignment
Practice rudimental strokes: Singles, doubles, flams, and buzzes.
Today we continued with the human evolution study to learn about humans taming fire to cook food and domesticating wild wolves (which would eventually become modern day domesticated dogs). Arianna really enjoyed learning about the history of taming fire, and asked to continue with the topic of human evolutionary history. We took many breaks during the two videos during the session to discuss and answer questions and clarify main points.
Arianna warmed-up with a mental math minute before we reviewed the terms quarter after, quarter to, and half past when telling time. Then, she worked on ordering decimals and fractions in different forms, and comparing decimals to the tenths and hundredths. A quiz on today's content as well as comparing decimals visually and comparing decimals and fractions in different forms was taken with Arianna scoring an 80%. We finished with multiplying 2-digit by 2-digit numbers using the break apart and common method.
Arianna added a new page to her COVID journal detailing the first place she wants to go when all the stores are reopened. She practiced forming and using contractions on the IXL website. After reviewing where we left off, we continued reading "City of Ember," and Arianna created a graphic organizer to help her take notes along the way.
