Area and Perimeter
Lesson Outline
To begin our lesson today, I had Oliver work with some pieces of construction paper to make symmetrical shapes. In addition, I used squares of paper to prove to Oliver that the area of any triangle with a base and a height that matches the base and height of a rectangle is exactly 1/2 the area of the rectangle. Next, we moved on to work through Chapter 14-6 on perimeters of many shapes with straight edges. Oliver displayed a good understanding of perimeter and his ability to find the perimeter of the common shapes in the text. I also had Oliver work on some unique shapes to find their perimeter.

Area of common shapes
Lesson Outline
Oliver and I moved on to discuss the way to calculate area for some basic shapes including parallelograms and triangles. This involves multiplication of the base and the height, and Oliver used his skills to multiply both whole number and decimal numbers to find area. I showed Oliver the basic reason why a triangle's area is only half of the multiple of base and height. Oliver was able to independently solve a number of problems related to finding area, and three homework worksheets were given to him.

Division of decimals by whole numbers
Lesson Outline
Oliver and I began the lesson today by grading the remainder of his homework. I outlined to him a simple math mistake he made and a hand-writing error that resulted in a math error. Following the completion of the homework, we used division to find the percentage out of 100% that Oliver achieved on his homework assignment by dividing the fraction he answered correct by the total number of problems assigned. Next, we moved on to work through a few problems related to division of decimal numbers by whole numbers. Oliver was able to fairly easily follow along with decimal division.

Multiplication of Decimals
Lesson Outline
Today, Oliver and I primarily worked on some of the homework that he was unable to complete at home. I explained to Oliver again why it is so essential to show his work. We worked on lining up decimals for keeping problems in order. Oliver and I were able to work through 5 of the 7 problems assigned to him for homework. The remaining two problems were given to Oliver for homework.

Complex decimal multiplication and division
Lesson Outline
Today,Oliver and I discussed division and multiplication of decimal numbers and whole numbers. I briefly worked with oliver on dividing through fraction to get a decimal number instead of a remainder. We worked through a number of problems from the lesson material in Chapter 13-6 for about the first 20 minutes of class. For the remainder of class we worked on multiplying decimal numbers by 2-digit whole numbers. Oliver had some difficulty knowing how to break down complex problems into solvable simpler multiplication problems. I challenging homework assignment was given to Oliver, and I will continue this work for next class.
