Hunter explores welding careers by viewing a video. Since he says that he has had some experience in this field this was of great interest to him. Good session.
I am planning to give Hunter a test on Chapter 5, so we are doing a lot of review. This afternoon, he did p. 301 (41, 47, 48, 49). He also factored quadratic equations, and solved them. He simplified square roots with imaginary numbers. He graphed parabolas. Hunter is not able to do all of these exercises on his own. With assistance, though, he is capable of completing most of them.
This chapter covers a variety of topics, and Hunter expressed that it is challenging to remember how to do all of the different types of problems. Hunter worked on p. 299 (6-11, 24-29). Some exercises involved operations with complex numbers. Others asked Hunter to identify the vertex and axis of symmetry of a parabola from its equation in vertex form.
We practiced completing the square to change quadratic equations in standard form to vertex form. Hunter also solved Quadratic Equations by factoring (if possible), or by the Quadratic Formula. I had him work on selected exercises from a practice sheet.
This afternoon Hunter and I reviewed his work on how to purchase and finance a new car. We focused primarily on the insurance quotes that he obtained from at least three insurance providers. We looked at exactly how the coverage was described and how much of the monthly premium was allocated for that particular coverage. Very enlightening. We will compare financing options during Friday's class and then move onto the next topic. We also updated our stock portfolio and discovered that Amazon and Tesla in particular were performing well.
We first had a cha- about Hunter's current life situations and options. Next the question arises on what the Florida/Indiana GED exams would consist of. So we went online and tried some of the math section. He did pretty well considering he was not using a calculator. The second portion of class was devoted to answering the question, "What is Artificial Intelligence?" To answer this question, we viewed to great video that helped to answer this probe. Good session.
Hunter began writing a 5 paragraph analytical essay in response to "The Lottery". He began by writing the introductory paragraph today, stating an opinion and answering the question why the villagers began the lottery. I assigned reading homework, which is due next Tuesday.
Hunter and I read aloud together in class, taking turns. We read "The Swapping of Nightmares" and discussed questions. We looked at illustrations - Max drew on pages of "Mein Kampf". Hunter will read at home.
Hunter views videos of amazing construction machinery. Specifically, a log six feet in diameter is cut into sheets of wood using a very large band saw. Another video shows how computers are being used to perform crash tests on automobiles instead of damaging the vehicle in real life. Good session.
