Gracyn practiced the spelling pattern for a-e words and then played Hangman using pattern words. We continued our close reading of 'Just Grace' with predictions and inferences. We read 'When Sophie Gets Angry- Really, Really Angry...' and noticed how the illustrations match and extend the text. Gracyn did a great job of analyzing the illustrations. She read a Fly Guy story independently and shared it with me.

Martin Luther King Jr.
Lesson Outline
Gracyn and I finished her baking at the start of class. We then learned about the life of Martin Luther King Jr. We did an activity with brown and white eggs to learn that people are the same on the inside even if they look different on the outside. The same lesson was reflected in Dr. Seuss' "The Sneetches," which we watched on YouTube. She completed some worksheets about the life of Martin Luther King Jr.

Gracyn baked a delicious batch of mini vanilla cupcakes today. She measured out all of the dry ingredients and combined them together in the mixer along with the butter. Using a whisk, Gracyn mixed the eggs, milk, and vanilla before adding to the mixer. She lined the cupcake pans and used an ice cream scooper to place the batter into the pans. While we waited for them to cook, Gracyn mixed powdered sugar and milk together for an icing. Each cupcake was dipped in icing, sprinkled with sprinkles, and handed out to all of her friends.

Gracyn made a beautiful piece of "stained glass" for her room door. On a piece of wax paper, she chose an array of colors to paint. In some areas, using the bottom of a cup, she dipped the cup in paint to make large circles and other areas she made stripes. Gracyn made a flower as the focal point and used fork tines to make the petals. We cut out a frame to place around her painting and will hang it up tomorrow when it has dried completely. The wax paper allows light to filter through the paint and will be very pretty hanging on the glass.

We continued today with the concept of place value, ones and tens. Gracyn added ones or tens to a two-digit number, using models to help. The ones were grouped together along with the tens to determine the sum. Gracyn used the white board to draw models that showed how she solved the addition sentences. Finally, Gracyn took a 5 minute timed addition facts quiz to help her quickly recognize and use strategies to solve problems.

Magic Tree House - The Knight at Dawn
Lesson Outline
Gracyn and I began the second book of the Magic Tree House series by Mary Pope Osborne, entitled The Knight at Dawn. We read chapter 1 in which Jack and Annie recalled the events of their first journey in the tree house. We were reminded that they found a gold medallion with the letter M on it, but don’t know who the tree house belongs to or where it came from. At the end of the chapter, Annie had declared she was heading back to the tree house, even though dawn had yet to break! We were so filled with suspense as to if there would be someone in the tree house during the night, that we read on and completed chapter 2! Jack and Annie arrived to find an empty tree house and then traveled to a place with knights and a castle. Gracyn answered follow-up questions for each chapter and did a nice job writing in complete sentences as we discussed the proper procedures for wording each sentence, sounding out words, and proper punctuation.

Gracyn worked on identifying common and proper nouns in text after a review of the features of both. She read a short selection about a frog and bird, then provided key details and wrote a short summary. We read the first few chapters of 'Just Grace', taking time to notice character traits. She also read a Frog and Toad story during her independent reading time.

Lesson Outline
Gracyn did a quick mid-chapter checkpoint worksheet to review the concepts learned so far in the unit. Adding and subtracting tens, finding the difference, and addition and subtraction math drills were covered. Today's lesson, using a hundreds chart to add, was also completed. Gracyn used a hundreds chart to count on by either ones or tens to find a sum. She also used strategies such as make a ten, draw a picture, and add ones and tens to solve word problems. Finally, we reviewed the adding a number to nine trick. For the facts 9 + 1 through 9 + 9, you look at the number being added to 9, subtract 1 from that number, and place a 1 in front of it to find the sum.
