Today, Gracyn participated in a school wide team building activity of human Hungry Hungry Hippos. The kids had to work together while trying to attain as many plastic balls as possible. One team member would lie on their stomach on a wheelie board while trying to grab balls with a basket. The other member would push the person back and forth by their feet and help collect the balls. Every round had different criteria of ball to attain and they each had to count their own balls to determine the winner.
Today Gracyn did observations on the hatched chicks. She drew a picture of them and wrote observations in her book about what they were doing. Since they hatched on Sunday and she wasn't here, I showed her the video of them hatching. She made observations in her chick hatching book and drew a picture of what they looked like. She was very curious about the egg that didn't hatch and wanted to open it. We cracked it open and observed the chick. It was fully grown so we decided the other chicks must have moved it around after they hatched and turned it the wrong way so it couldn't come out.
Gracyn read an Anna and Elsa story for her independent reading today. She did a great job with fluency and determining unknown words using context. We read a new Mo Willems book together, noticing similarities with other Pigeon stories. She completed her "Ocean Animal" book today and Mr. Bill sealed the cover for her.
Gracyn took the Quiz today and received a 100 percent! I am very proud of her. Afterwards, we began a new unit on geography and she began working on a book - Me on the Map. We read two books, "Silent Night" and "The Cookie Angel."
Today was a very exciting day with the hatching of the baby chicks. We spent some time observing their behaviors. When we pulled ourselves away from the adorable chicks we played a couple of math games together. The first was called Snowball Fight. We each had our own igloo game board with cut out snowballs. We took turns rolling 2 dice, subtracting the amounts, and "throwing" that amount of snowballs. The winner was the first to run out of snowballs. The second game was called Shark Race. We each had a shark board surrounded with numbers. We both rolled a die and moved that many spaces. Then, we compared the numbers that were landed on. The player with the larger number won a counter. Gracyn wrote out the greater than and less than sentence to correlate with each roll. Gracyn gained the most counters and won the game.
Today we completed part two of the Knuckle Song. We also continued working on Gracyn's memorization of Jingle Bells. Additionally, we reviewed note values, the notes of C position and proper technique. Lastly, Gracyn identified and sang along to some piano arrangements of Christmas songs.
Gracyn and I went to the library to exchange books today. She is doing a good job of self selecting books to read independently. The rest of our time was spent completing the written portion of her book. We also located and printed some pages of photos from the Internet to add to her final pages.She just couldn't be more excited to present this book to Mom.
Gracyn very quickly covered the Unit 7 material and took the test today. The test covered using symbols to compare two-digit numbers and mentally finding ten more or ten less of a given number. There were 10 questions and she got all but one correct. The missed question was material Gracyn knows, she just misunderstood the question. When I explained what information to focus on she corrected her answer.
