Lesson Outline
34.4 Fertilization and Development – We learned about the major events of later stages of development. We learned how the process of gastrulation results in the formation of three cell layers which develop into the structures and tissue layers of the body. The process of neurulation is the first step in the development of the nervous system. Both are critical events in development.

34.4 Fertilization and Development – We learned about fertilization and the early stages of development. We learned how a human develops from a single cell to a newborn baby. We discovered where fertilization takes place and how an egg or ova becomes a zygote or fertilized egg. We learned that cells must increase and specialize in order to carry out specific functions.

34.3 The Reproductive System –We learned that there are a group of related hormones called estrogens which include estrone, estradiol, and estriol are produced by the ovaries. The levels vary throughout a woman’s life. Structures such as the adrenal glands, fat tissue, and muscles produce small amounts of some estrogens too. Estrogens rise during puberty. We learned about the bacterial and viral sexually-transmitted diseases.

34.3 The Reproductive System – We learned the function of the female reproductive system. We discovered that a female’s ovaries release only about 400 mature eggs in her lifetime. We learned the path of an egg through the female reproductive system and the hormone levels through the menstrual cycle.

34.3 The Reproductive System – We learned the function of the male reproductive system is the production and release of active sperm. We discovered that sperm development cannot occur if the environment is too warm so sperm reside in the scrotum which exists outside the body cavity. We learned the three main parts of a mature sperm, the function of each part and the path through the male reproductive system.

34.3 The Reproductive System – We learned about the structures that enable humans to produce offspring. We discovered the effects of estrogens and testosterone on males and females. Then we learned how puberty begins in the brain by the hypothalamus signaling the pituitary to produce the two hormones follicle-stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone to facilitate puberty.

34.2 Glands of the Endocrine System – We learned that the pituitary gland produces hormones that regulate many other endocrine glands and some organs. We created a table of each endocrine gland, hormones produced by each gland, and functions of the hormones. We learned that the endocrine glands are quite small but tremendously important to the human body. The pituitary gland is the size of a pea but it produces many hormones and controls most of the other endocrine glands. The quantity of hormones produced by the endocrine glands is very small. Women produce only about a teaspoon of estrogens in a lifetime.
