Unit 4 Genetics Chapter 11 Introduction to Genetics
Lesson Outline
11.4 Meiosis – We studied gene linkage and gene maps. We completed data analysis on gene location and crossing-over. We used the probability of phenotypes to construct a gene map. We learned that a tetrad means four chromatids formed by two pairs of replicating chromosomes. A zygote is a cell produced by the union of egg and sperm. We discovered the difference between mitosis and meiosis. Mitosis produces two diploid cells such as in body cells. Meiosis produces gametes or four haploid cells. Tetrads are formed and crossing-over occurs.

11.3 Other Patterns of Inheritance – We continued to describe the other inheritance patterns. Mendel’s experiments could not predict the outcome of traits that involve multiple alleles. That is when more than 2 alleles are involved in a phenotype such as four different coat colors in rabbits. Polygenic traits are controlled by the interaction of two or more genes that exhibit a wide range of phenotypes. An example of polygenic traits is the wide variety of skin color in humans.

11.4 Meiosis – We compared mitosis and meiosis by modeling the two processes. We noted the cause-and-effect relationship between each process and the type of daughter cells produced. We also learned the meaning of haploid or half as many chromosomes as diploid cells. Homologous means chromosomes in which one set comes from the female parent and one from the male parent. Meiosis is cell division in which gametes are produced.

11.3 Other Patterns of Inheritance – We learned to describe the other inheritance patterns. Mendel’s experiments could not predict the outcome of traits that involve incomplete dominance such as pink flowers from red and white parent plants. Both phenotypes blend in heterozygotes. Mendel couldn’t explain co-dominance either. For example, speckled chicken feathers from solid color feathered parents.

11.2 Applying Mendel’s Principles – We understand the difference between phenotype and genotype. We learned that tall plants have one phenotype but two possible genotypes. We studied two-factor crosses. Then we performed one and two-factor crosses on several traits. We learned how probability principles work in genetic crosses. We practiced completing several Punnett squares.

11.2 Applying Mendel’s Principles – We learned that DNA is the universal code for life. It enables an organism to transmit hereditary information. DNA along with the environment determine an organism’s characteristics.
