Review of fractions; mental math; speed work (addition/subtraction)
Lesson Outline
Today Max began math with a speed session in addition and subtraction (timed worksheets from the Spectrum Mathematics workbook). I timed him on double digit addition and subtraction. Max did well and only missed one problem! Max also worked in his Mental Arithmetic workbook (section 1; lesson 1; page 4). Max did well with most of the concepts. Some things needed review but once he was reminded how to do them, he was able to complete them. Finally, Max worked on adding, subtracting, and multiplying fractions. He did well and needed only a bit of help with the common denominators. Max's attitude was great throughout!

Cell Project
Lesson Outline
Max will complete a two sheets of acetate painting. Max has chosen Deadpool as his subject from a previous class. The images have been placed on the acetate and Max will paint the backside of the sheets to give the images definition. He will apply thin coats of paint to insure that the paint dries quickly on the acetate. Once complete, making sure that there are no gaps in the painting, we will matte and frame Max's project.

Decimals and Fractions/Angles
Lesson Outline
This morning Max began by reviewing chapters 7 and 8 from his school workbook. He completed workbook pages 37-42 in the workbook. He is getting more and more comfortable with these concepts and needed much less assistance from me. We also did workbook pages 60-61 from his school math book. It was a review of angles and Max did well. He is really understanding the naming of the angles and different constants (i.e. a right angle is always 90 degrees; a straight angle is always 180 degrees; etc.) which is so helpful when completing the exercises. Max also wanted to review the multiplication facts with the flash cards. He was a whole minute faster today!
Max finished Ramona the Pest yesterday with Mr. Stephen so we discussed what happened in the last chapter. Then I read aloud the first chapter of Ramona the Brave. Max wants to read that one next!
Finally we gathered all of his work and books and packed up because it is his last day at the Batt School.

Graphoc Design 101
Lesson Outline
Max will be introduced to graphic design, what it is, where it can be seen in modern day, and how we will use it in our sessions. I will show Max work completed by Rob Duenas, t-shirt designer, art director, and now game concept artist. We will finish by showing Max basic construction and how to use shapes to build a skeleton for any image or character. We will apply this to a couple of characters that are on his pencil box.

Decimals and Fractions
Lesson Outline
This morning Max started with a review of Chapters 7 and 8 from his workbook from The International School of Monaco. These chapters are a review of fractions and decimals. I used his workbook to create an activity sheet for him to practice. He is improving in many areas. There were some things that are still confusing to him so we worked those problems together (for example, changing a fraction or mixed number into a decimal 1 3/4 = 1.75). He also isn't always sure what the written directions are asking him to do, but once I explain it to him and show him what it is asking, he is often able to do it without much assistance. We also used multiplication flash cards to review multiplication facts. He was really good and only got confused on some of the 8s, 9s, and 12s. Reviewing these will help him in finding the least common denominators and with reducing fractions. In the middle of our math lesson we took a break to read chapter 7 in Ramona the Pest. Max is really hoping we have time to read the final chapter tomorrow as it's his last day and he loves the story!

Vocabulary/Reading
Lesson Outline
Today Max had a new list of vocabulary words assigned from his school in Monaco. We went onto spellodrome.com and he was able to copy down list 25 into his yellow vocabulary workbook. Then he created a story using 3 of the vocabulary words as assigned. He chose to write a story about a trip to the Museum of Natural History in New York City. He wrote two nice paragraphs using great handwriting, creativity, good conventions, and good spelling.
For reading, a couple of times throughout our math lessons, we took a break to read aloud from "Ramona the Pest". It was a nice reprieve from the math he was working so hard on!
