Lesson Outline
Today was Max's last day here until he returns in December. We began by doing some reading and wrote an original limerick instead of the usual journal article. Then I gave him a short lesson on surface tension of water and did a little experiment with him in the kitchen using household ingredients. He really enjoyed learning science. We finished the day by reviewing our math from the week. He also took 3 books from the library to read over break: Oliver Twist, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, and Around the World in 80 days. Max was a joy to teach!

This morning Max finished his journal entry about his family trip to Disney World. He wrote about the second day of his trip and wrote all about the rides he went on and how he felt while on them. It sounded like he had a LOT of fun!! While Max was home yesterday, he read 5 or 6 chapters from Around the World in 80 Days. I had him summarize what he had read and retell it to me so that I was caught up. Then we took turns reading aloud from page 69 to 91. He continues to love the book and brought it home again to read more this evening.

Decimals/Fractions/Angles/Multiplication
Lesson Outline
Today Max started out with a worksheet made by me that was reviewing fractions. I gave him addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of fractions. He continues to work hard on them but needs reminders on how to find the least common multiple, as well as how to simplify his answers after. He did well with some assistance from me. I also created a decimals worksheet where he was subtracting and multiplying decimals. He did well with this worksheet and only needed a couple of hints along the way. I made a worksheet of angles for Max to measure and he remembered quickly how to measure them. He was very happy! Finally, Max completed workbook page 52 from his Spectrum Math book. It was 3 digit numbers multiplied by 1 digit. He did very well with this page too!

Max began his day with a journal entry in his journal from home. He wrote all about Day 1 of his Disney World adventure. Max did a nice job of using descriptive language to tell in detail about his familiy's fun at Epcot on Thursday. For reading, Max decided he wanted to read something besides Diary of a Wimpy Kid so he asked to choose a book from the Batt library. He chose 5 classics to bring back to his room so that we could read the backs of the books and decide on what to read. He narrowed it down to Oliver Twist, Around the World in 80 Days, and Frankenstein. Ultimately he chose Around the World in 80 Days and I read chapters 1 and 2 aloud and then he read chapters 3, 4, and 5 aloud. He was really enjoying the story and couldn't wait to read more at home this evening!

Decimals/Place Value/Subtracting with borrowing
Lesson Outline
Today Max continued to work on decimals. He completed an assignment with addition/subtraction/multiplication of decimals. He did well with the addition. When subtracting from a whole number (i.e. 15-.0023) he sometimes struggled with the borrowing but by the end he had it down. He did well with the multiplication once reminded how to determine where the decimal goes in the answer. Max also worked on place value in his Summer Bridge workbook. There were questions anywhere from the thousandths place to the hundred million place. He did well and got them all quickly. Max worked on subtraction (triple digits minus double digits). He did very well on the first 4 columns of work and then he got confused on the borrowing and was one number off on all of the answers for the last 2 columns of work. We decided to use our working lunch to fix the errors and he did wonderfully!

Max started out the morning by writing in his journal about an exciting experience he had the evening before. His mom and dad had been walking on the beach and they came across a female sea turtle laying her eggs. Max and his sisters went out to watch and Max described the experience in great detail using colorful words and emotion. I enjoyed reading about it. We also took turns reading from his Diary of a Wimpy Kid book. It was fun to discuss the part that we read and talk about our personal airport experiences (as Greg in the book was having quite an awful travel experience himself!).

Decimals; Fractions; Polygons
Lesson Outline
Max worked on a fraction worksheet that I had created based on the lessons he had completed during the school year. He was to add, subtract, or multiply the fractions. At first he had forgotten how to find the lowest common denominator but after a few refreshers, he remembered. He worked hard and completed all of the problems with some guidance from me helping him list the multiples of various denominators so that he could find the lowest one. He also worked on decimals. He did well with them and only had trouble when he was subtracting a decimal from a whole number (i.e. 10 - 0.008 -- he just forgot how to borrow in that situation). Finally we worked with polygons in his Summer Bridge workbook. He had to determine if various shapes were regular or irregular polygons and then determine what shape they were and if they fell into other categories such as trapezoid. Max did well in math!

This morning Max wanted to start with writing. We chatted about a few ideas of what he could write about and he decided on writing about an adventure he had last summer. He wrote about going cliff jumping in Capri. He included lots of fun details about the color of the water, the different grottoes he saw (heart-shaped!), the adventure of getting to all of the locations, etc. It sounded amazing! Max also worked in his Summer Bridge workbook on the Day 3 assignment. In it he corrected subject/verb errors. He also did a reading comprehension activity. Finally, he read aloud from his Diary of a Wimpy Kid book and we discussed. Max did a great job!
