Limiting reagent problems involving molar mass conversions. Conversions between grams and moles and working with molar ratios. Also introduced percent yield vs. theoretical yield.
Conversion between standard and scientific notation. Avogadro's number and how it represents a 'count' rather than a mass or weight. We spoke about how to represent very large and very small numbers and why it is important to scientific inquiry.
Today Ben attempted balancing equations (single replacement). The reactants and products were given and he filled in coefficients. We also discussed scientific notation.
Ben and I reviewed unit conversion using stoichiometry and used these skills to find percent mass of an element in a molecule. I introduced the water molecule as well as solutions and solubility.
I spoke with Ben from 8:13 - 8:43. Ben was in a very good mood and very eager to talk about his time in NJ at his grandmother's funeral. He had mixed feelings overall but shared a lot of interesting information about his family history and the Vacarro name. He also enjoyed seeing his good friend, Josh, and showed me a picture of them together. It was a very interesting, clearly needed, and helpful session together, and I am encouraged to hear Ben so willing to share his experiences, thoughts, and feelings openly and freely. Ben was very pleasant and cordial this morning.

Lesson Comments
I was asked to sub for Ben as Jack was not in until 8:45 today, so I subbed for 1/2 hour, from 8:13 - 8:43.
In today’s class, Ben learned about alkanes, including what they are and how they function in reactions and solutions. We also talked about alkenes and alkynes and how they both relate to alkanes and how they differ. Trans vs cis structures were also discussed.

Lesson Comments
Subbed this class - Ben was not very engaged or interested in the lesson. We did make some progress though and reviewed some of his past topics.
