First, we checked the rain gauge to see if we got any rain over the last 24 hours. It was empty. After that, Remington and I discussed different kinds of weather. Then, we explored a "Dress for the Weather" Nearpod lesson. He took a virtual field trip to a park where children were flying kites. Next, he had to help a cartoon dog and cat dress for the season. He had a lot of fun with this section. Lastly, he completed a quiz and "Time to Climb" to determine his comprehension.
Remington was very excited to check the rain gauge. Unfortunately, the rain gauge had little to no water in it. We went back to his office so he could chart the rain for Monday and Tuesday. We used MSN Weather to get the information we needed. Then, we read a weather book and discussed tornadoes, hurricanes, dust storms, and temperatures. Remington was able to come up with a plan for each of the storms.
Remi and I reviewed what we discussed about weather last week. Today we explored a few Nearpod lessons touching on tornadoes, lightning, and storms in general. We learned that tornadoes are formed when positive and negative charges come together. In addition, we learned that tornadoes travel at 500 km/hr. About 2/3 of tornadoes happen in the Midwest. Not only that, but meteorologists help people get ready for storms. Remi took notes in his Science Notebook.
The lower school has been learning about the layers of soil. They include bedrock, parental material, subsoil, topsoil, and humus. As an extension of learning, we completed a Science Lab where we created Edible Soil. The bedrock layer was a solid shortbread cookie. The parent material was crumbled shortbread cookie, For the subsoil, we used vanilla pudding. Next, we used chocolate pudding with mini chocolate chips for the topsoil. We added a few gummy worms to represent real worms in this layer. For the humus, we used chocolate pudding and crumbled Oreos. Lastly, for the green grass, we dyed coconut flakes with green food coloring.
I prompted Remi to write or draw a reflection of what he's learned in Science and Science Lab. Remi chose to draw pictures. At this point, he was able to indicate that he had learned about the soil layers and made edible soil without the green coconut.
For the remainder of the session, we read from the book "Rocks, Crystals, and Minerals".
Remi and I reviewed the layers of soil. He will continue to take notes in his Science Notebook. Remi is very excited about our Science Lab for Wednesday. We will be making Edible Soil.
