We read the book "I Love the Earth". We reviewed what we learned last week regarding soil. Then, we began learning about the five layers: bedrock, parent level, subsoil, topsoil, and humus. Next, Remi took notes about the bottom two layers of soil. We are learning this as a lead-up to the EDIBLE SOIL LAB that we will conduct on Wednesday during Science Lab. Remi is very excited for the lab. :-)
I introduced myself to Remi with a Nearpod lesson about me. Then, we moved on to a lesson about types of rocks. We focused on igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks. We will continue to learn about these types of rocks throughout the next week.
The Sun Rotation Northern Hemisphere Southern Hemisphere Equator
Lesson Outline
Emilia watched a brain pop video about earth and its rotation. We discussed the equator, the earth spinning on its axis, the northern and southern hemispheres, and made a model of the earth.
Alexandra completed her interactive calendar exploring the different aspects for the month of August. She finished her calendar talk and her calendar writing. She read and discussed a book about the weather. She read 3 new readers in her reading series which focused on the short vowel sounds, put together her daily sentence puzzle, and worked on an activity enabling her to recognize coins and their value.
Planets and Solar system/ Spatial relationships/positional terms
Lesson Outline
Alexandra viewed an illustration and chart of the solar system and was afforded prompts to identify the 8 planets, and their relationship to one another and to the sun. We started by reviewing the planets in order, starting with the closest one to the sun, Mercury. I also used a mnemonic device to help her with recall (My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Nachos). While this is a difficult concept, my intent was to familiarize her and help her focus on the beginning letters of the planets (Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune). I then showed her a 2-dimensional representation of the Earth - a globe - to facilitate Alexandra's spatial awareness; Alexandra correctly identified Florida as where we live. I also used a mnemonic device to help her with recall ('My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Nachos'). While this is an abstract and difficult concept for a child of Alexandra's age to comprehend, my intent was to familiarize her with the planets names and help her focus on their beginning letters (Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune), to help her with recall. We also listened to two catchy songs about the planets of the solar system using the names of the planets. She was even introduced to information about dwarf planets. Alexandra visibly enjoyed watching the videos and hearing the songs - and asked to play them again. These lessons aim to develop and strengthen Alexandra's spatial awareness and ability to understand her surroundings and position in relation to objects and surrounding space.

I subbed for Barbara today., July 3rd, 2025 - from 11:00 - 12:00 (Science).
Alexandra completed several reading comprehension activities about dinosaurs. She made a reading comprehension booklet and a dinosaur measuring booklet about dinosaurs.
Alexandra checked on her corn and bean seeds and noted that they now have roots and sprouts. She practiced a solar system song, and learned about the 8 planets that orbit the sun. She completed several activities pertaining to the sun.
