Lesson 2: The Interaction of Light and Matter – We learned that reflection occurs when light waves bounce off the surface of a material. In transmission most light waves travel through an object. When absorption occurs light energy is converted into other forms of energy. A material is transparent if it allows almost all light that strikes it to pass through and forms a clear image. A material is translucent if it allows most of the light that strikes it to pass through but forms a blurry image. A material is opaque if light does not pass through it. Next we learned that the law of reflection states that the angle of incidence always equals the angle of reflection. The normal to the surface is a line that is perpendicular to the surface. A light source is an object that emits light. Light spreads out in all directions from a light source. A narrow beam of light that travels in a straight line is called a light ray. Many objects reflect light. Reflected light waves travel from an object to your eyes allowing you to see the object. Dust scatters light. Scattering occurs when light waves traveling from one direction are made to travel in many directions. When light waves travel from one material into another the light waves change speed and direction. Refraction is the change in direction of light waves when they travel from one material to another material. The greater the change in speed, the more the light wave changes direction.
Discussion Question:
Think of three different materials – one transparent, one translucent, and one opaque. What happens when light comes in contact with each material?
An example of a transparent material is clear glass; when light comes in contact with glass it transmits the light waves and objects can be seen clearly through the glass. An example of a translucent material is glass brick; it transmits light waves but objects cannot be seen clearly through it. An example of an opaque material is black cloth; light waves cannot travel through the material.

Craig and I reviewed geography vocabulary flashcards and discussed vocabulary we encountered last week in our reading. We discussed where we are in the book - both historically and geographically. We continued to read. During our second session, we researched to remind ourselves of what was happening in U.S. history - on the other side of the pond - at the same time as the setting in the book. We continued to read and discuss. I stopped often to quiz Craig on certain vocabulary words, geography, historical events and government.

Today Craig reviews how to Multiply and Divide By 10, 100, and 1000. We do this by completing page B-59; of the Middle School Math With Pizzazz. Nice session.

Today I reviewed and graded Craig's writing from last week.
We looked at it together, and he made corrections as I questioned and prompted him to do so.
He will get two writing grades: 1) his original writing without help; 2) his corrections according to guided questions.
After this, we reviewed the plot of Romeo and Juliet to the point we had completed earlier and watched/discussed the film for ten minutes.

design fundamentals. Craig had some art time today. The other art students have been working with the concept of "recycled" art forms. Craig took a discarded palm frond, and made a wall hanging with a seahorse on it. Good job, Craig!

Craig competed typing his letter to Julian Edelman. He typed a formal letter using proper formatting explaining that he wrote a paper about him and then asked him for an autograph. He found the New England Patriots address online and is going to mail the letter and the paper to him.

Craig and I talked about his summer fitness plan. I gave him some ideas for exercises at home, how much physical exercise he should get each day, foods to eat and avoid. We ended with a short walk before the rain!

Today Craig and I played a Jeopardy game inside because of the weather. We focused on Health and Nutrition. This was a great game because it incorporated many of the things we have discussed all year. A good end of the year review!

I will introduce Craig to the world of graphic design. I will show him some examples of how this subject applies to the world that we live in and some examples of the work that has been completed by students here at the Batt School.
