Gabriela and Laina Peralta

Lesson Topic
Patterns, Problem solving / body part identification/ folliwingf directives/Right and Left orientation and color correspondence
Lesson Outline
The girls' previous teacher forewarned me that Laina had complained of a bit of a headache at the onset of class. We then reviewed a multitude of body parts which we had written on sticky notes and played a game of Pin the Tail on Laina, as she graciously offered to use her body chart for this exercise. We crafted a blind fold out of cloth pieces found in the classroom, and Laina was spun around and wherever her finger landed, she had to identify the body part closest and try to find the written word. The girls seemed to enjoy this activity; they required assistance, in the form of prompts, to find the body parts identified on the pink sticky notes. A few of the 3-letter words, such as ear, were correctly identified, and the girls identified the corresponding beginning sounds.

We then reviewed patterns and used our recently acquired learning gains to replicate color pattern using Lego blocks. While doing this, we sang nursery rhymes that repeated the chorus, noting the repetition of the chorus in songs and improvising new lyrics to the other verses.

We concluded the session by playing a game of Twister. This was a fun way to review right and left and body part correspondence - and the girls were excited to take turns participating in the activity, spinning the wheel, and seeing how many of their classmates wanted to join in the activity which concluded the day's session. Prior to their departure from school today, the girls were reminded to take home a notification about an upcoming trip to Butterfly World on 3/28 requiring parental consent.

Lesson Topic
St Patrick's Day/ letter & number recognition
Lesson Outline
Gabriela and Laina had a great day today! They started by completing 3 worksheets to practice their writing skills and letter recognition. They wrote about their idea of St. Patrick's Day in their journals to strengthen their emergent writing skills.
Gabi and Laina did a great job finding and circling the letters on our hello board this morning! They also helped me read the board by sounding the words out. They did fantastically sounding out each word!
The girls finger painted shamrocks to work on their fine motor control and sensory integration as finger painting is a fantastic part of brain development for later spatial, math and language concepts. They also mixed blue and yellow paint together to make green.
We had 2 stories today. The first was "Ten Little Ladybugs" (as requested by Laina). This book not only fortified their listening, understanding, speaking and relating skills, but also worked on their number recognition.
For gross motor development, we read the interactive book, "Kiss Kiss" where the girls had to act out what the main character in the book was doing. Then we did "Bear Hunt" to really get those muscles moving.
The girls enjoyed strengthening their observation skills during our science exploration today. They used pincers to pick up shells and rocks from our science center and looked at them through magnifying glasses to take a closer look. We talked about how the items were the same and how they were different.
Gabriela and Laina used play dough to explore their creativity. Laina made a butterfly cupcake and Gabriela made a beautiful heart.
Both girls love working on the computer! Their favorite thing to do so far, is the ABC activity.
We ended the day with a domino matching game to work on their 1-1 correspondence.
Great day! Looking forward to tomorrow!

Adventure in the Gardens
Lesson Outline
We started the session with the routine of singing the alphabet song, and practicing the months of the year, days of the week & today's weather.

Then, with the help of a magnifying glass and some child-friendly tweezers, Gabriela, Laina and I went for a hunt in the garden for little items that caught their attention. We put them in a container. We had lots of fun in process!. We went back inside to study all the findings. We displayed them and made them into beautiful pieces of natural artwork. Gabriela and Laina got really enthusiastic making them and asking lots of questions. Also, we went over the names of all our findings.

Letter identification and beginning sounds
Lesson Outline
Laila and Gabriela began the session by mimicking sounds, and using rhymes and rhythms as a fun way to repeat the beginning sounds of objects in the room. This sufficiently engaged their attention and we then used a pre-k primer to identify beginning letters. The girls were encouraged to trace the letters and then try to write them in words using a few letters and rhyming words. Aferwards, we discussed how to play the game of jacks, and the girls connected the game to one their nanny described. The girls concluded the session by clapping a series of repetitive sounds that I modeled, and did a follow-up game of Simon Says, to review body parts, and facilitate their ability to discriminate words and follow directives.

Today the girls started the day counting the teddy bears and practiced writing numbers.(Laina is working on forming #4 and counting on). (Gabriela is working on forming #6 and is able to count on from lower numbers. Together we told the story of the three bears, learned the three bears song (sequencing, using different voices/tones) and both girls built the three bears house out of legos and blocks. They then made signs for the momma, papa and baby bear which they taped on to each bear. They created their own art momma and baby bear using a variety of art scraps and mediums which they each wrote about.
They read the morning message with their new reading wands, looked for letters and made music using different parts of their body which they wrote about in their journals.
They ended their day dancing with their teddy bears and reading to their teddy bears.

Body Part - Identification and function/Following Directives
Lesson Outline
We were able to finish up drawing and adding details to Gabriela's body outline on butcher block paper. Gabriela was excited as she wore a dress today, which necessitated a few changes in the drawing; however, she proved to be a wonderful model and seemed to really like the finished product - especially when Laina complimented her on looking so pretty in it. Gabriella told me what to add as details to the dress she was wearing and she enjoyed adding the glue for a heart detail that was added to the design of the dress. Both Laina and Gabby were complicit in following 2 step directions and provided me with the materials needed to finish the design. We also reviewed about 25 body parts and agreed to finish the remaining 5 tomorrow. For the last 5 or 10 minutes, Laina and Gabriella were invited to join in a dance party. Laina immediately chose to join in the festivities, but Gabriela seemed more shy and reticent, choosing instead to remain in the classroom and finish drawing.

Lesson Comments
Both girls followed directives well today. We were able to finish up the body outlines for Gabby and Laina was cooperative in assisting up in providing materials and complimenting the finished product. Gabby did not wish to join in a dance party at the end of the day and was not made to participate, while Laina was an eager and enthusiastic participant!
