Computation/addition and subtraction/word problems
Lesson Outline
Emilia was in good spirits despite having been roused from a nap in the car. She was refreshed and immediately produced an assignment we did not get to finish yesterday in class, demonstrating responsible behaviors and excellent recall. Emlia got right to work on the exercise which required her to add and shade in colors that were ascribed to the addition problems. She completed the 16 on the assignment and worked independent of prompts. I introduced her to a number line as an alternative strategy to addition. We then moved onto word problems which introduced the concepts of more and less, and Emilia competed an activity requiring her to draw one more or one less than objects shown on paper. She worked on additional math exercises involving addition and subtraction problems, and Emilia was permitted to choose a sparkly sticker for sustaining attention and completing assigned work. During break, she was permitted to assemble a marble run with her sister, which she clearly thoroughly enjoyed. On more than one occasion, Emilia stated that she loves coming to the Batt School. She gave me a warm hug upon arrival and dismissal.
I worked with Alexandra from 2:30 - 4:00 this afternoon. She was already familiar with me so the transition from Reading to Math was not difficult. We began with a calendar activity to help orient Alexandra to day, date, time, and she pointed out the sun when asked about the weather. She also referred to a wall calendar to identify the date as the 9th and was helped to recall the month is June. Alexandra was given initial assessment math questions to determine what she already understands about numbers and counting and to gauge what would be a good starting point with her, such as one-to-one number correspondence, sorting things by size and understanding basic math concepts. Alexandra was given an activity sheet tasking her with sills practicing counting. She was asked to count the number of scoops of ice cream scoops that were on cones and to then write the number. This exercise also allowed us to reinforce concepts of shapes (e.g., circles, cones, triangles). Alexandra was also asked to use scissors to cut out various numbers on a sheet and followed direction to use a glue stick when engaged in a cut-and-paste activity that required her to paste the correct number under corresponding pictures showing different numbers. Next, she was given a connect-the-dots activity which required her to count by twos. Afforded minimal prompts when she reached higher two-digit numbers, Alexandra was able to connect the dots by twos up to 68 and was delighted to find that she had completed a picture of a corgi dog. She enjoyed this activity very much and requested more. I assured her I would bring in similar activities tomorrow. Alexandra demonstrated that she understood that when we add a number to zero, the result is the number itself. This exercise allowed me an opportunity to introduce the term "sum" to our arithmetic vocabulary. Alexandra also began working on a cookie addition activity and we incorporated materials she collected from outside during her break to assist us in adding. We used pieces of coconuts and shells, along with other manipulatives, to help solve simple addition problems. As we neared the end of our session, Alexandra grew a bit tired so we used the materials to make a picture of a sunflower, incorporating our identification, recognition, and knowledge of shapes into our math language repertoire. Alexandra finished the day taking turns on an academic computer activity which allowed her to practice and reinforce many of the higher-level thinking skills and concepts she's integrating into her knowledge base.
I got to know Emilia this morning, our first session together. She enthusiastically shared her summer plans, interests, family, travel, and her favorite colors, foods, and pets. We then got to work on a math skills assessment to gauge a good starting point to begin lessons with Emilia. Emilia then worked on a calendar skill activity , following directions well and demonstrating very good recall. when subsequently queried on the month, date and year. She was then tasked with answering questions about numbers and counting by two's. Emilia is right-handed and holds a pencil well. She filled in simple addition problems and asked to work on more problems, tackling adding two-digit to one-digit numbers. We used manipulatives to facilitate performance but Emilia subsequently was able to compute the problems in her head. When filling our answers on an activity sheet of problems, Emilia got the answers all correct. She reversed the ones and tens on two of the double digit numbers; however when asked to look over her answer, she self-corrected both without requiring additional prompts or assistance. Emilia used scissors as a component of another activity, holding them correctly and exercising good manual dexterity skills. Emilia enjoyed going outside for her break between classes and playing on the equipment with her sister. She enjoyed playing an interactive academic computer game for a few minutes at the end of the day which reinforced several of the the skills practiced today.

Aiden was absent from class today. It was a very rewarding experience having him as student this year. Most dedicated of all the students that I taught this year!
Teddy and I had a 'Fun Day' on the last day of school. He chose to play the picture guessing game Hedbanz with Ms. Dorothy, Alexandra, and me, and then play Poki games on the computer. Teddy had a wonderful school year, and I have loved being his teacher. Enjoy your summer.
Libby and I had a 'Fun Day' on the last day of school. She chose to have imaginative playtime with her doll house and create pictures using her colored pencil set. It has been a wonderful school year with Libby, and I have thoroughly enjoyed being her teacher. Have a great summer.
Today, Alexandra worked on a 3-D shape activity on the cone, sphere, and cube. After we discussed the attributes of each shape, Alexandra sorted pictures printed on flower petals into like shapes. Then, she glued each petal onto its corresponding shape flower.
Today, Libby answered the final few questions from the 1st grade readiness assessment. Then, she worked online counting by 10s and some more to name 2-digit numbers and she played number recognition Bingo with the numbers 1 through 100.
