APES Test Preparation -
To help Chase prepare for the APES test essay questions, we visited several issues by watching portions of award winning movies. To lock down the cause and effects of global warming we watched sections of An Inconvenient Truth Sequel; Truth to Power. To examine the central ocean gyres and accumulated plastics in the ocean, we reviewed sections of the film: Plastic Ocean. To make sure Chase understood the connection between chlorine and the ozone depletion issue, we viewed the Ozone hole movie. Finally to connect the loss of the glaciers and sea level rise, we watched highlighted sections of the movie: Chasing Ice. Homework: Review sample APES Exam.

Journal; complete story; answer open-ended questions
Lesson Outline
30 minutes - Chase wrote her journal entries with very little assistance. She then read them to me. Her Spanish accent has improved immensely since we began.
15 minute break - this was Chase’s last Spanish lesson. Much of her break was used to say “good-bye” to her teachers.
75 minutes - Chase finished reading the last 2 chapters in La Guitarra Misteriosa - Chapters 15 & 16. She then translated what she had read, identified grammar points and answered open-ended questions at the end of each chapter. Her work was very good.
Chase enjoyed learning about Peru in her “country report”. She was very interested in it so she did a PowerPoint on just Peru. Today she turned it in. It is very good.

Spanish Report
Lesson Outline
Chase continued her report. As she completed each country, she related to me what she found to be the most interesting fact. Chase now knows the 20 Spanish speaking countries. She learned their locations, cultures, history and geography. The original assignment was for her to report on 10 countries, however she reported on 12. Her interest in the countries themselves made her investigate more. She said she learned a lot from this project and she enjoyed it.

Culture project
Lesson Outline
Every language course is required to have culture/tradition/history built into the curriculum. Chase has never had cultural instruction in her Spanish courses. She has had only language. So today's lesson was a culture project. Chase was to choose a minimum of 10 Spanish speaking countries - then research, explore and investigate what makes that country of interest to visitors. This session was guided by me. I taught her the 20 Spanish speaking countries, then let her choose 10. In giving her the names of the 20 countries, I mentioned at least one historical, or cultural fact. I also showed her a map and we reviewed the geography of the countries - especially the proximity of the Spanish speaking Central and South American countries. We discussed the influence the Spanish conquistadors had on those countries, causing the language and culture to overlap.

Chase chose Spain, and due to its influence on Central and South America, I had her choose 2 major cities (out of a list of 8, which I supplied) to research. It is important to note that the layout and organization of her actual report is hers alone. My guidance came in the form of recommending historical, cultural and geographic facts that she might wish to explore in each of her 10 chosen countries.
Chase was very thorough in her research and asked important questions. I told her to relay only the most pertinent information - of interest to young people - preferably college students.
Our time ran over the assigned 3 hours. In order to complete the information on the last country, Chase worked an extra 30 minutes.
