Population Ecology -
Chase was quizzed on vocabulary of population ecology. I provided a detailed description of population studies, and the methods used to determine the health of a population. I described my research, and the mark-recapture data I collect to help me keep track of dolphin population and the line transect methods I use to conduct environmental assessments. We explored the limiting factors of a population that help a community maintain the carrying capacity for every resident population. We reviewed the factors that determine a population size, and the differences between a ‘K’ and an ‘R’ population. Chase was tasked with drawing a graph of the data from a wild bat population study, and identifying different trends that were evident from the graph. We then explored the graphs that would show exponential growth of a population, and how this type of growth, if unchecked, would undermine sustainability. Chase also drew a graph of a logistical growth system, where the carrying capacity controls resources. Finally we listed the density dependent and independent limiting factors by which every large population is influenced. Homework: Complete the chapter 6 sample test, and the questions at the end of module 21 in chapter 6.
