Characterization: Self-Concept, "A Very Old Man With Enormous Wings"
Lesson Outline
Today we went over the different categories of a person's self concept and how Chase might apply this understanding to how she develops characterization in her writing. Chase brainstormed how to approach her next assignment on point of view and was inspired by "The Metamorphosis." Next we read "A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings" by Gabriel Garcia Marquez and discussed how it relates to Kafka and how the two dealt with realism and absurdism to develop their themes.
Today Chase had some translation exercises to practice vocabulary. The research demonstrates that it is imperative to practice the words and to *write* them in order to remember them. Not only is Spanish essential for college admissions, however, but also for college graduation, as most colleges require two years of a language study or else testing out. Of course, it would be helpful for her trips to Costa Rica as well.
2nd draft Critique for Revision, The Metamorphosis
Lesson Outline
Today I asked Chase to again demonstrate her knowledge of adjective and adverb subordinate clauses by using them in sample sentences. Next, I read and critiqued the first revision of her short story draft. Chase will revise once more before submitting the final draft. Next, we continued to read "The Metamorphosis." I asked Chase to consider what questions and thoughts Kafka is inviting us to consider with this literary deliberation on the human condition of loneliness and family relationships. For her next writing assignment, I asked her to brainstorm a scene written from the perspective of another character in the story.
We are going through practice problems on a practice SAT exam.

Lesson Comments
Chase has not spent any time preparing for this SAT test, and now she only has a couple of weeks. She informed me of her decision to take the SAT pretty late. Her past scores are very low, and without extra practice (she has not done any of the problems I ask her to do out of class), and repetitiveness, she won't do much better in the math section than before.
To review verbs and vocabulary, today Chase completed translation exercises: from English to Spanish and Spanish to English. She really needs to use the Quizlet and whatever other means possible to learn the vocabulary. We also practiced with er/ir verbs and added 3 irregular verbs to the mix: estar, ir, dar. We will be working with those for the rest of the week.

Environmental Science:
The history of Earth -
Today Chase watched the documentary film by National Geographic: The Story of Earth. This movie has been voted the best documentary ever. This film offers a fast pace demonstration of the most current approach to Earth’s history starting 4.5 billion years ago with the birth of the sun and the formation of the planets. Filmmakers used the most current discoveries that have revolutionized geology, and enabled scientists to envision Earth's iterations in vivid detail. The narrative describes how water and oxygen came to earth, how life began and how each of the past five extinction events changed the quality of life. It also vividly shows the cause and effects of natural climate change, meteoric events, and how important checks and balances in nature control living things.

Homework: Read Chapter 8 and complete chapter test.
After such a long absence, Chase needed a review. We reviewed subject pronouns, numbers 1-100, the verb gustar, and a bit of present tense -ar verbs, which we shall continue tomorrow.
To begin our lesson, I asked Chase to create examples of both an adjective and adverb subordinate clause in a sentence. Next, we read an author written article about expository writing. We discussed the relationship between exposition and plot especially as it is expressed by the narrator. Lastly, we continued reading "The Metamorphosis."
