An inconvenient Sequel part 2 -
Chase and I watched the second part of the movie: “An Inconvenient Sequel - truth to power”. This movie continues reporting on the science and politics surrounding the issue of climate change. This part of the film showed the process and work, conducted behind the scenes, between the president of India, the secretary of state (Jim Kerry), Al Gore, and some alternative energy corporate leaders. These few men found an agreement to provide India with the technology to promote green energy if they agree to not build the dozens of coal burning power plants. We discussed the quote: "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has." - Margaret Mead. An inconvenient Sequel part 1 -
Chase and I watched the first part of the movie: “An Inconvenient Sequel - truth to power”. This movie continues reporting on the science and politics surrounding the issue of climate change. We stopped the film in places to discuss the political forces that have worked to deny the issue, and the reasons for some international leaders to ignore warnings and continue to construct coal burning power plants. We also reviewed the political history for the United States since 2000.

Present and Past tenses; Mexican Aztecs and their story of being conquered by Spain.
Lesson Outline
Our lesson today was divided into 2 parts. The first - 30 minutes -was identification and differentiation of the present and past tenses. Chase was a bit rusty on the formation of the past tense but once we reviewed it, she progressed easily. She recognized all the regular verbs - ar, ir, and er.
The second part - 90 minutes this story was a mix of grammar (present and past tenses), history and culture- El Origen de Los Aztecas. It is the story of the origin of the Azetecs. We first discussed how Spain sent many "conquistadors" all over the world to conquer countries, in the 14th, 15th and 16th centuries. This story concerns Mexico and the Aztecs and Cortes - the year 1519. Chase read the story in Spanish then identified each verb in every sentence. She especially identified the tense of each verb - present and past. She translated one paragraph at a time, creating a word bank. The story contains multiple choice and open ended questions in Spanish. She answered the questions and created a short time-line of historical events. She did very well and showed a lot of interest throughout.

An Inconvenient Truth part 2 -
Chase was asked a series of questions relating to what she learned from the film: ‘An Inconvenient Truth’. We discussed the issues presented in the film, and how they were related to her experiences. The film was produced when Chase was a small child, and we explored how the subject of global warming has been expressed (or not represented at all) in her education. Chase was tasked with exploring her belief system related to pollution, climate change, and conservation. We will revisit these observations after researching the known science about these issues. Finally we explored some examples of biological vs physical changes that are related to CO2 accumulation in the atmosphere. The bird called the red dot and the horseshoe crab were one example of biological changes, as the horseshoe crab spawn when the seawater is at a certain temperature; the migratory red dot depends on that spawning event for sustenance mid-way through the very long migration. Changes in sea temperature makes if more likely the birds will miss the spawning event and go hungry.
