Rory and I discussed chapters two, three and four. Rory had written his double journal entry for the chapters. We discussed the explanation of the quotes that he cited. We talked about explaining his citations more thoroughly. We discussed the meaning of the illustration on the cover. Rory will read the next chapter for homework.
Rory and I read the prologue to the informational text. We discussed the opening. We also discussed what a double journal entry consists of--I modeled how to write one. We read chapter one of the book and did a double journal entry for it. We also discussed how to cite textual evidence to support one's entry. We read the first three chapters. Rory will read chapter four for homework, and we will discuss and write the journal entries tomorrow.
Rory and I finished watching and discussing the video on Poe's life. We then completed an anticipation guide for the short story. We then began reading "The Tell Tale Heart" by Poe. We read it aloud. We then answered some discussion questions. Rory then took a comprehension assessment on the story and did quite well. I ended our time by introducing the vocabulary book. We began the first lesson.
Rory and I are going to study a short story unit. The first author that we will read is Poe. We watched a documentary on Poe's life. We stopped to discuss questions about the video. We also discussed how his life correlated to his works. We need to finish watching and discussing tomorrow before we begin reading his short stories/poems.
Introduction to the class, grammar pre-test and goal setting

Rory and I got to know each other. He shared his interests, and we discussed possible novels to read. We also discussed goal-setting for the year. He said that he would like to read and write more fluently. I had a small grammar pre-test on sentence structures. Rory took it, and we discussed his results. It diagnosed the problem areas. I can now tailor my instruction.
We reviewed portions of the book, "Hiroshima" that Vlad is now reading in English class. We used Vlad's reading study guide to help us navigate through a meaningful discussion about this impacting event in human history. We completed all of the Study Guide questions for Chapter 1 and almost half of the questions for Chapter 2.
Abby and I continued our study of the novel. We finished discussing chapter VI. We used the study guide questions as a springboard for a deeper discussion of plot development and characterization. We previewed the next chapter and discussed the difficult vocabulary. We then briefly began reading chapter VII.
Abby and I continued our study of the novel. We answered the study guide questions for chapter V. We read through the chapter to find the best textual evidence to support our study guide questions. We then previewed chapter VI. We began reading the chapter.
Abby worked hard on vocabulary this hour. She was able to choose the correct vocabulary word to complete the sentence based on the context. Abby was also able to determine if the vocabulary word was used correctly within the context of a sentence.
