Bella watched a movie and then analyzed the movie for the theme, mood, setting, objective, and characterization. She discussed how the setting and character development created the theme and objective of the story. She then wrote a critique of the movie comparing it to the novel.
After completing the novel Where the Crawdads Sing a month ago, today we read and analyzed the music lyrics by Taylor Swift for the upcoming movie on the book. Bella analyzed the lyrics for character development, theme, setting, and mood. She then analyzed the album cover for the theme of the novel. We then read another short story by Langston Hughes.
Bella read and analyzed the short story Thank You, Ma'am. After the reading, we did a character analysis of Roger. Bella then did a writing assignment where she wrote a short story
about this character, attempting to make the character sympathetic to the reader—in other words, create
a character that the reader could understand and like despite his or her behavior.
Bella read and analyzed the short story Charles by Shirley Jackson. We discussed the elements of humor in literature and how it develops characterization. Bella wrote a paragraph imitating the elements of the short story. We then began the short story Thank You Ma'am by Langston Highes. We will complete the story tomorrow.
Bella read and analyzed William Faulkner's "A Rose for Emily". We analyzed for methods of narrations and the multiple narrators, stream of consciousness, point of view, mood, and sequence.
Bella read and analyzed the following three short stories: Lamb to the Slaughter by Roald Dahl, The Tell-Tale Heart by Edgar Alan Poe, and The Lottery by Shirley Jackson. She analyzed and discussed the themes, irony, climax, and character development in each.
Bella read and analyzed the short story The Most Dangerous Game by Richard Connell. Upon completion of the reading we discussed the following themes from the short story: The world is made up of two classes – the hunters and the huntees, Who cares how [a hunted animal] feels…[they only] understand one thing – fear of pain and fear of death, Instinct is no match for reason. The topics allowed Bella to think and argue her point with excellent facts for support. We then continued the novel Wonder.
Bella read and analyzed Roald Dahl's short story The Landlady. She analyzed and practiced reading strategies by predicting and inferring, as well as analyzing characterization and foreshadowing. She then began the short novel Wonder.
Bella watched a movie and had to determine the theme, analyze the plot and its various phases, examine how literary elements affect plot progression, assist in character development, and convey meaning, including the motif, symbol, foreshadowing, echoing, flashback, opposition, metaphor, irony, foil, choice of language; and organize their thoughts. I stopped the movie at various points and she orally discussed the above points. She enjoyed the literary analysis of the movie.
Bella read, discussed, analyzed, and completed the novel Where the Crawdads Sing. Before the end of the novel, she made predictions based on text interspersed throughout the novel. She then analyzed the validity of her predictions based on the text.
