Matthew took notes on the book's two symbolic motifs-night and fire- as well as on two predominant themes-loss of faith and the father/son relationship . We then parsed Wiesel's comment in the preface that the source , if not the cause, of the Holocaust was the childish faith in God, the vain trust in man and the dangerous illusion in the goodness of Mankind. We discussed what caused Wiesel's cynicism .In this regard, we noted that the original title of the book was "The World Remained Silent. ". Matthew commented on situations today where the world tends to take little action when crimes against humanity are reported such as the situation in the Ukraine . We then studied the text and located examples of the illusions of Wiesel's community that contributed to their passivity in the face of the deportation to the camps. Last, we addressed some of the study guide questions bearing on our class discussion such as Wiesel's purpose in writing "Night" and why he originally could not find a publisher . Hw-study for tomorrow's final exam.
