Reading from "The Hate U Give" and discussion. If you were Starr, how would you react? Does her reaction to what's going on seem appropriate, and why or why not? What do you think of her parents and their relationship to each other, and to her? Jane then worked on her writing. We then worked on Language Arts.
Jayne worked on her novel, then we read and discussed "The Hate U Give"looking carefully at the characters' actions and reactions and how we might react if we were in the same situation.
We read "Everyday Use". An educated African-American woman who is reclaiming her African roots visits her uneducated sister and mother whose daily life involves the use of homemade quilts and butter churns. The visitor fawns over the quilts and now says they should be saved for special occasions, forgetting that when she lived there the quilts were just for everyday use. Jayne really like this story, and I'll look for more like this. Great discussion about it.
We spent some time editing the novel (a difficult experience for any writer), then read and discussed "The Hate U Give." Jayne did really well with the editing.
