We took a break from "The Hate U Give" and Jayne's novel, and read the short story "Dead Man's Path" by Chinua Achebe in which a new headmaster who has been educated in England tries to impose"modern" changes to the very traditional African school. It doesn't work. Jayne couldn't relate to it, so I'll try again.
We took a break from "The Hate You Give", and Jayne writing her novel. Instead we read and discussed the short story by Kurt Vonnegut "Harrison Bergeron", a clever piece about a society where everyone must have equal abilities, so those who are gifted in any way are given "handicaps" by the government. Jayne thought it dark, so I'll find something lighter.
I read "The Hate U Give" and we discussed the significance of the characters and the story given recent events. We looked as well at the language used.
Jayne decided to work on her novel, or novella.
She hasn't decided which it will turn out to be since the length will be determined by her characters and their story.
The plan was for Jayne to start reading short stories, beginning with one by Kurt Vonnegut, then continuing with a story by Sandra Cisneros (author of "The House on Mango Street")
