Lesson Topic
marine biomes
Lesson Outline
Use photographs and images to outline and discuss the following marine biomes. The intertidal zone, the coral reef and the open ocean. Discuss where each is located, the stability of the biome, the plant and animal life found in the intertidal zone and the coral reef. Examine the anatomy of a coral, the importance of the coral reef to the environment, and how coral bleaching occurs. Locate on an image the open ocean zones consisting of the photic, aphotic and benthic. Discuss the effects humans have had on each of the biomes

Aquatic biomes
Lesson Outline
List and discuss the general characteristics of aquatic biomes. Include salinity, depth and water flow. Introduce the 2 broad categories of aquatic biomes, fresh water and marine (salt water). Discuss fresh water biomes as low salinity biomes. Introduce the effect flow has on the plants which can grow in these biomes, and where they can grow. Explain how sediment will settle where two rivers or streams combine, and why. Discuss the oxygenation of turbulent water and the effect on the species of fish which can live there. Introduce lakes and ponds. Discuss the different zones of water beginning with the littoral, limnetic, profundal and benthic zones. Discuss the growth of plants, oxygen concentration, and available radiant energy

Lesson Outline
List and discuss general physical characteristics of aquatic biomes. Include salinity, water depth, and water flow. Determine that temperature is not a factor.
Introduce the 2 broad categories, fresh water and marine biomes.
Under fresh water, outline and discuss the characteristics of streams and rivers and creeks. Discus their dependence on terrestrial biomes to provide organic food. Introduce silting, oxygenation of turbulent water and the organisms which adapt to this environment

Lesson Outline
Use diagrams to demonstrate how the inter temperate convergence zone is formed by the Hadley uprisings of clouds around the equater. Discuss how this zone produces extreme rainfall over the equatorial region, the tropical rainforest and subtropical rainforest.
Through photos and diagrams, view the savanna biome and its locations. Discuss the temperature, rainfall, biomass present, animal and plang\t species variety along with the mutations which broought aout many of the adaptations to the environment.

Lesson Outline
Discuss how the ingetropical convergent zone is formed, and the effect it has on the tropical biomes. This is responsible for the extreme rainfall which occurs over the tropical biomes.
Discuss and explain the temperature, rainfall, flora, fauna, soil richness and location of the savanna biome. View photos of the species variety present ,both fauna and flora. Discuss the effect humans have on this biome.
