Continue to work on the informative writing paper. Finish any body paragraphs and check that the details match what each one is about. Reread to ensure that the punctuation and capitalization follows the standards. Begin to discuss how the conclusion starts narrow and ends broad.
Based on the graphic organizer created about video games, sort the different ideas into three categories that will become the three body paragraphs (or two if only two). Talk about how a grabber makes the reader want to read it from the first sentence. Show examples of different types of grabber sentences and decide which style would be best for what the topic is. Craft a sentence that will be used next week.
Pick a topic of interest that Chris wants to learn and then write about. Begin to do research on the topic and write down these details on paper. Discuss how to decide if a website is a good one for information or not: example, why Wikipedia is not good but can use the reference page to find good sources.
Colson read a short story by Ray Bradbury, entitled 'All Summer in a Day.' He opted to read it to himself rather than aloud before answering questions to assess his synthesis of the material. He also was tasked with reading another story entitled 'Charles,' by Shirley Jackson and answer 8 short answer questions at its conclusion. Colson found the Bradbury story rather boring.
Chris read a realistic fiction story in his Literature book and demonstrated his understanding of the ideas by stating the conflict and conveying the major events that occurred during the rising action. He was able to summarize the correct order of events, which we described as the linear plot, and he identified the climax of the story when afforded supportive prompts. I encouraged Chris to put himself in the protagonist's position and discuss what he would have done in a similar situation, and he answered logically and supported his ideas effectively. Chris concluded our session describing the resolution of the conflict and the story's final outcome. He also finished work completing a story board for the project on which he's been working.
