Lesson Comments
Jason had a very hard time staying awake for us to do our work. We were able to complete the lesson and he fell asleep during the last 10 minutes.
Practice how to read a passage to find out information. Underline any that answer the focus questions. Then look at the general questions and work together to understand how to figure out these types of questions. Use pgs. 110 - 111 of PSAT practice book.
Continue to practice Process of Elimination (POE) with the fourth passage. Chris will independently select the focus questions, use the POE technique, and then find the answers in the passage by finding key words or if the line is given, read 5 above and 5 below.
Continue to practice Process of Elimination skills with focused questions. Work on the third passage in the test practice book by first selecting the focus questions and answering them the best he can using POE and how to find the right spot for the answer.
Continue to practice Process of Elimination skills for language arts questions. Look at 2nd practice passage and go through each question to find the focus questions. Work on eliminating any answers that can be seen as incorrect. Explain the reasoning for each one.
Have examples of compound words split onto separate cards. Read the words and put them together to make the compound words. Tell if the two words are able to give the meaning of the compound word: (snowman, toothbrush, sunset) or not: (carpet, jellyfish, butterfly).
Focus on process of elimination as a skill. Use PSAT sample questions to show the technique. Use this to figure out what are considered focus questions which are well suited for this method. Model how to use POE and have several practice ones as well.
Introduce several testing skills to help with time management and answering questions. The first is Process of Elimination (POE). Show that if you are not sure, eliminate what you know is wrong and then guess if necessary as there is no penalty for guessing. The next is pacing, it is better to answer questions correctly than race to answer all and have less correct.
Discuss what a test looks like in the classroom and how it is different than standardized tests like the PSAT. Talk about what reading tests look like and how he answers them. Ask if he uses any strategies and what they are. Discuss that we will start doing strategies to help get the best answers on testing.
