Jackson finished his sun catcher and attached the four sun fun facts to it. We hung it up on outside door of the lunchroom where the sun can shine through it, and our school community can read about the sun and learn! Then we watched the video “Why Is The Sunset Red?” by Astronomic. We are learning about the science of light and sunsets as part of our STEAM learning. We reviewed our ROY G. BIV and looked at his notes from our color theory work. Then Jackson wanted to paint a sunset. He is watching a step-by-step video on how to paint a sunset using watercolor. Jackson is painting on heavy watercolor paper, and he is learning the principles of that medium versus acrylic paint on canvas.
I introduced Remington to artist Keith Haring who became famous for his outline subway drawings of people and animals. Haring's style was unique and exciting, and he was influenced by Disney and Dr. Seuss illustrations and Peanuts comics. Haring used simple symbols in his work to show messages like hearts for love and so on. Remington started to work on a set of worksheets about Haring’s art. He practiced drawing outline figures in Haring's style. We also posed our bodies like Haring's figures and timed how long we could hold the poses. We also looked at symbols in my Symbol Sourcebook. Eventually, Remington will create a large mural on paper for the school walls.
Jackson had a busy class session creating three holiday ornaments for his family. He used creative thinking and had good control over his marking tools.
Subject and Predicate Halloween Sentence Mix-Up with Drawings
Lesson Outline
Teddy wanted to do the Subject and Predicate Halloween Sentence Mix-Up and add his drawings. He randomly chose his subjects and his predicates to come up with these silly sentences: 1) The black cat carved our pumpkins, 2) The Haunted House rode on her broom, and 3) The bat went on a field trip. He drew very detailed illustrations to depict the sentences. Excellent work, Teddy!
Cam looked at his large-scale painting that he started on Friday and will continue painting it on Wednesday. Since he was wearing his white reptile uniform, he opted to draw on one of his small-scale paintings that he created a week ago. He truly has a good sense of design and needs little direction. His finished work is quite strong and unified with repetition of positive and negative spaces, shapes, and lines.
