Calendar / Time / Coins
Lesson Outline
Kelcy and I began our lesson with work on the calendar. We reviewed all of the months and he traced the word February. We discussed how the first day of the month starts on the day after the last day of the previous month. This month the 1st is on a Thursday because the last day of January was on a Wednesday. Next, Kelcy practiced reading both the digital and analog clock to the hour. We also reviewed the coin names and amounts using the money book he made last week. Finally, to help Kelcy remember the next ten when counting to one hundred, he worked on a 1 more, 1 less activity with the numbers ending in 9.

Today we continued research on the Arctic and specifically polar bears and the snowy owl! He journaled about the Snowy Owl and all the new facts he learned today. I told him that I am so, so proud of him and I can't wait for him to show his skills to his Spring Lake teachers! We finished the day with some sight word games and reading (almost to the end) of Junie B. Jones and the Mushy Gushy Valentine. He LOVES these books and laughs out loud when we read them!

Lesson Comments
As mentioned above, parts of our lesson today took a lot of coaxing! But we talked about it! We talked in detail about how he came here not knowing how to write, and is leaving as a writer who can put anything he is thinking on paper! I hope he knows how proud of him I am :)

Place value
Lesson Outline
Today, I introduced Kelcy to the concept of place value. Working with the numbers 11 and 12, we placed objects in a ten frame to show ten ones or a ten and some more ones. On Mathseeds, Kelcy found the least amount of 10's and 1's blocks to represent a given number from 11-30 which correlated with our lesson. Finally, we played a quick board game using a die to move around the board while reading the instructions on the spaces to move forward or backwards.

Numbers 20-29 / Shield
Lesson Outline
Kelcy and I spent time reviewing the numbers 20-29. We counted forwards and backwards along with recognizing and writing each number. Kelcy also determined the number before and after any given number. To reinforce this lesson, time was spent on Mathseeds with correlating activities. Finally, we took time to finish Kelcy's shield. He painted the front and back metallic silver. Then, we printed out a crest which Kelcy colored and painted and I cut out. We glued the crest on the shield and it is now ready to take home.

TanGram
Lesson Outline
Kelcy is working with balsa wood and is able to make cuts much easier because it is much softer than the traditional popular wood. Today he makes a five piece tangram using a miter box and back saw. After each piece is cut to size, they are sanded with 200 grit sand paper. Lastly, each piece is colored with a felt pen. Great session.
