We discussed the outline for writing about our experience over the weekend. Cam started a new notebook and is going to research animals and write about them and sketch the ones researched.
As today was Colson's first day, we first discussed the books he has studied in the last two years and what he was scheduled to read this year during the 8th grade. I further mentioned some possible works we may study this year in order to make sure he had not previously read them. I then provided instruction on and defined the following literary terms: theme, plot, setting, symbols, and foreshadowing. Regarding plot , I detailed the elements of plot by highlighting the elements of the Freytag pyramid. We applied the Freytag elements by identifying the plot elements in the TV series " Ted Lasso" which is about a soccer coach and team.
Teddy participated in a guided reading exercise. He was encouraged to make predictions, summarize story and sequence the action and events appropriately. I read 'There was an Old Lady who Swallowed Some Snow.' Teddy was prompted to guess what happened in the story and his recall was assessed via queries. Although he initially said he couldn't remember, once encouraged and afforded supportive prompts, Teddy remembered all the items and also recalled the reason the lady swallowed all the items. He received a high five for his accurate memory and active participation, and then was permitted to finish an art project he began in a previous class before dismissed for lunch.
