We dove into some reading exercises on IXL today. Chris was tasked with reading a portion of a short story. Then he answered questions regarding theme and tone.
Today we discussed creating a compelling story arc. We read from Stephen King's On Writing, which outlines the hallmarks of a good writer. Then David applied this knowledge to his current writing.
I told PJ today how incredibly proud I am of him. When we met in September, he didn't like writing and struggled to get his thoughts out. His improvement this year is amazing! We are working on writing using The House on Mango Street as a mentor text. PJ's vignettes are so well written, painting a picture in the reader's mind of the setting and characters. Well done, PJ!
PJ read from the Time for Kids magazine today as well as his independent reading book. Independent reading can help students improve their comprehension, vocabulary, and fluency. It can also help them develop confidence, build stamina, and discover who they are as readers.
I read the first chapter of a book to David today. I like to expose the students to all types of literature to encourage a love of reading and to show them the different genres that exist.
Philip and I were to read a passage and he was asked to answer questions about content; however, he did not have the assigned book, so we selected another book and I moved on to reading pages from "The Broken Circle. Philip was attentive and asked relevant questions. I encouraged him to read a few passages and to read his part with the emotion indicated and with and clear articulation.
