Kaitlin completed several activities using her Wordly Wise words and Spelling words in context. She wrote her vocabulary words for Books 5-9 of the Odyssey.
Cam participated in a lively discussion with two of his peers about the 4 new characters that were introduced in S.E. Hinton's, "The Outsiders." He demonstrated excellent recall and retrieval skills and identified and assigned the different characters to the group - identifying with one of the social classes depicted and stating his rationale. We identified the language techniques used by Hinton to enrich her writing, and Cam demonstrated that he understood various elements of writing style used in the novel. Cam was engaged and productive in class - sharing his perspective on the characters and making predictions about the plot. Vocabulary was also reviewed as it was specific to the southwest - (a fictional town in Tulsa Oklahoma) in the 1960's.

Lesson Comments
Cam joined my reading class with Chris and David this morning and it proved to be especially productive. The reading sustained every boy's attention and they were active and engaged participants in the class - sharing their perspectives freely. Cam had been waiting for Jordon to arrive for his Spanish class but there was some confusion regarding his schedule and whether or not Jordan was coming in - and he ended up not coming in - so Cam stayed in my class. I entered 90 minutes in total for him as I had him 4th period as well.
Cam recalled where we had left off in "the Outsiders," and was able to summarize how Hinton in developing the plot and creating interest. Cam was able to deduce the implications of subtleties in the language Hinton used in the novel and related to some of the character depictions. In fact, he took an opportunity to show me former pictures of himself when his hair was shorter and bleached - which paralleled the description of the character Dally (Dallas Winston). I've encouraged Cam to consider drawing some of the characters as their descriptions were portrayed so vividly with the language used by Hinton - embracing and integrating his creative imagery and drawing skills. We discussed the figurative language/devices used by Hinton to enrich the story, elements which included symbolism, foreshadowing, alliteration, hyperbole, simile, and metaphor. It made for an interesting and productive session, which sufficiently sustained Cam's interest.
