We discussed the expectations in this Reading I class. Cam is being encouraged to engage in literary activities that build upon his prior knowledge and skills in order to strengthen his reading and critical analysis skills. We will study the modern coming-of age genre-"The Outsiders," by S.E. Hinton. This will be paired with a variety of writing opportunities, vocabulary and language structure study, and strategies associated with rhetorical and literary analysis. Cam was deliberating between two books - one an autobiography and one, a coming-of-age genre ("The Outsiders") - but as his peers and teachers saw the book, all commented on how good it was, and Cam's interest was piqued. We began reading the introduction. Cam was queried on what we could deduce thus far about the narrator's personality based on the literary devices Hinton used. He was familiar that the main character is known as the protagonist and made personal connections to the story. I am encouraged and hopeful that he will approach this study with a positive attitude. We were accompanied by 'Princess,' Cam's veiled chameleon who joined us on today's journey into the novel.

I suggested a few books to read that might pique Cam's interest, including mythology; Cam said this was the only subject in which he has been a little bit interested in the past. He insisted he has not and will never read a book. I started to read the novel, 'The Outsiders' aloud, but Cam showed no interest. We will research books in mythology that contain stories, myths, or legends about lizards in efforts to better engage him. The focus will be to facilitate Cam's ability to analyze how specific sentences and/or specific paragraphs contribute to meaning in literary nonfiction.
