We discussed ways by which to develop a topic sentence into a good essay and hold the reader or audience's attention. Cam has excellent logic and is able to effectively establish and articulate his rationale and reasons to support his stance. He uses clear and convincing evidence to support the points he makes and share counterclaims. We have been developing an essay based on his experience earlier in the week showcasing his lizard to the preschoolers. Cam expresses himself exceptionally well verbally and is being encouraged to express himself on paper; he has agreed to use a computer to type his work.
We discussed how to continue a writing prompt about Cam's experience talking to the Pre-K students about lizards, which he did yesterday. I created a topic sentence and asked Cam to think about how he would continue writing to an audience to pique and sustain their interest.
Cam created a sculpture of a reptile using wire, tin foil, and clay. He had a vision when he began his sculpture but was dissatisfied with the outcome of his efforts and decided to start over. He is very interested in reptiles so he is encouraged to enrich his interest in different mediums and forms of expression.
At the onset of class, Cam and I discussed some topics current in the news and he initially engaged in a discussion about the inauguration. He then shared some pictures and details about his experience working in his job as a herpetologist. He received permission from Ms. Judie to bring in one of his reptiles tomorrow, Wednesday. Doing so showed respect as he not assume he could bring one in today since yesterday school was closed for a holiday.
Cam and I discussed different narrative styles and how one might make an impact when writing or speaking to a group of indifferent people to get their attention. He will respond to a writing prompt next time we meet.
