Condensing and Expanding Logs
Lesson Outline
I gave Alexa examples of how to condense logarithmic expressions. We then started 2 pages of exercises that asked Alexa to first expand, then condense, logarithmic expressions. She did a great job with expanding the logarithmic expressions, using the log rules. The condensing exercises were a bit more challenging for her, but she pressed through as long as possible.

Condensing Logarithms
Lesson Outline
I reviewed the notes from yesterday with Alexa, in which we expanded logarithms. Then we looked at 3 examples of condensing logarithms with the same rules. She was able to answer two of the examples independently, so I think she is understanding it better. We'll continue tomorrow.

Expanding Logarithmic Expressions
Lesson Outline
Alexa finished the portion of her work involving solving logarithmic equations. I taught her how to expand logarithmic expressions. There are 3 rules with the product, quotient, and power of logs that we used to expand and simplify 5 examples. Tomorrow, I will show her how to use the rules to condense log expressions. She seems to be enjoying this material, which pleases me!

Logarithm Equations
Lesson Outline
Since Alexa enjoyed solving for the value of x in logarithmic equations, we continued with more of these exercises. She did a great job working out 8 exercises during our class time. I wrote them out on the board, and she directed my steps.

Log Jam
Lesson Outline
Alexa and I completed an enrichment page of logarithm work. The exercises were less straightforward than previous ones, and required her to think outside the box a bit. She had to pull from previous math knowledge. She did a great job with this, and I told her that I am proud of her.

Lesson Outline
Alexa completed a variety of exercises on logarithms today. She changed exponential functions to logarithmic form and back again. She evaluated logarithms. For enrichment, we went more in depth by exploring a variety of relationships between logs.

Lesson Outline
I had Alexa work out 8 exercises that asked her to switch back and forth from logarithmic form to exponential, and then to evaluate logarithms. She needed me to review the process before she could do them on her own, but once we talked about them she was fine . We will hopefully continue more tomorrow.

Exponential Growth
Lesson Outline
Alexa and I talked about a real-life example of exponential growth. It is actually a comical situation. I am having problems with mildew in the shower grout of one of my bathrooms. I had to explain to Alexa what grout is. This past weekend, I had a relative visiting from out of town. She knew of my "grout battles", and had commented on the problem when she visited a few months ago. On Saturday, she happened to notice the shower tiles again. She told me, "Tori, the grout looks EXPONENTIALLY worse." Great! So, I told Alexa this story, because I think it is comical that someone used a math term to describe my growing issue of mildew in my grout! I drew an exponential graph for Alexa, and reminded her that exponential growth is slow at first, but then steadily and often quickly rises. I joked that I better get my mildewy grout fixed soon, or else my entire bathroom, and maybe even house, would be covered with mold and mildew!

Lesson Comments
By the time Alexa came to class and settled in, we didn't have enough time to do a lesson, so I opted to share my "real life exponential growth" story with her. It gave us a laugh!
