Review for Final Exam, Mock Test, Exercises Related to Final
Lesson Outline
We went through a 14 question and answer test format. Most important questions: What are the ( 6 ) elements of design, what is the most important thing in starting a design, social distancing guidelines before COVID (comfortable space), and identify the most popular resources when looking for new fabrics or cutting edge designs. We next need some applications related to design selections. Based on a brief description, we identify color and furniture selections.

Review for Final Exam, Most Important Elements!
Lesson Outline
We jointly went through all of the presentations from past classes and selected 1 or 2 very important topics we have discussed to put into a Final Review Session next week, and to prepare for a final exam. We came up with 20 total topics, which will be put in a simple format for a final.

Mathematics (Continued), and Assignment (Design)
Lesson Outline
For the first half of the class, we refreshed our conversation of converting feet to inches, and inches to feet. We discussed how critical it could be, as when we shop in furniture stores, often furniture is listed in inches. So, we worked on a few examples of converting. Then, we talked a bit about fractions to decimals. Then, we went into designing 4 college dorm rooms: 1 for the agriculture student, 1 for the performing arts student, 1 for the math/science student, and 1 for herself. We reviewed all design elements and discussed why she selected what she did.

Learning that Sofia does not like Math. So, I said we would work on the math a little at a time, because it is confusing. Therefore, I believe a little repetition each week for a few minutes will reinforce the difficulties. She is still performing well, and participates. We discussed how we are approaching the end of the school year. Next week I would bring some questions from each of our past sessions to review for the final exam.

Watching How-To-Video and Discussion Summary & Starting to Learn Calculations of Square Footages
Lesson Outline
The first half of the class, I asked Sofia to select a couple, "How-To," Videos related to interior design: How to build a cabinet, how to wallpaper a room, how to organize a closet, how to build a pool, how to paint a room, etc. Once, we determined a how-to direction, we walked the video and talked about the design ideas we liked, and which we would change. Each video illustrated how people work/function with clients, and how we listen to each client's functional needs, practical, and just colors/items the client prefers.

The second half of the class we began talking about some of the critical math functions designers use every day. We did some exercises converting rooms from feet and inches, to just inches, and then reversed the concept. We talked about converting decimals to feet and inches, and back again. We talked about how these conversions are used daily working in the Interior Design Field.

Lesson Comments
Sofia was definitely hungry for lunch today, but even as she was having extreme hunger pains, she actually applied herself and worked through all of the complicated math problems right to the end of the class. She is a trooper! Looking forward to next week. I am thinking of bringing in a hand's on project for next week, which is the reasoning behind the HOW-TO Videos. It was a chance for me to see where Sofia's head was, and a direction we can take to format next weeks assignments.

Space Planning
Lesson Outline
Sofia was provided a shell of a one story single family dwelling, and then provided with paper blocks of each room: Entry, Living, Dining, Kitchen, 3 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, 1 master, study, garage, and powder room. I had her analyze why rooms would potentially be located at the front of the house, sides, or rear area. We talked about why bedrooms possibly might be located separate to the master. Which rooms would be best with optimal views out the rear of the home, and why. Then, we compared her design to the original floor plan to see how close she was to the original plan, and talked about how her plan functioned just as well as the one I provided from an online home builder. Next, we did the same drill for a living room 20 ft x 20 ft. This time we had to place the furniture blocks in the room. The 3rd was Disneyland. I provided her with blocks of: entry gates, main shopping/dining/parade route, Fantasyland with the Castle, Pirates of the Carribean, and so on. We talked about what questions we may want to ask the Disney Corporation before we attempt the space plan. We talked about often how the idea is to put the most popular rides at the further distance from the gates, so the population would be forced to walk the entire park and purchase food and merchandise. We talked about how the iconic rides and castle may have to be the most visible element, which is why we placed it central to the main shopping area/parade route.

Continuation of The Astronaut's Couple's House Design
Lesson Outline
I had Sophia finish up making selections for the astronaut couple's home. We modified the spare bedrooms to girl-themed rooms. Once completed, I had Sofia explain her selections room by room. The great thing that happened was she was able to find some, "looks," she would like to carry over into her new bedroom.

Graphic Designing and Let's Design Interiors for an Astronaut Couple
Lesson Outline
We began today's lesson by utilizing Vistaprint.com. Sofia was asked to pick out 4 business card designs she likes graphically, and which define her personality and style. The second part of the lesson was to begin the design of a 2-story home which is owned by an astronaut couple with no children. The home has living, family, library, kitchen, powder bath, entry, and dining on the first level. Second story of home has a master bedroom, bath, and closet, and 2 secondary guest rooms and another bathroom. Sofia began by selecting options for the home, in which we will continue on next week. She was asked to maintain a list/file for all the selections room-by-room. We talked about the different furnishings and how she could do something really futuristic perhaps balanced with some sophistication.
