Philosophy of Space Planning: Comfortable Space
Lesson Outline
We discussed how psychologists studied how various strangers would enter a room and sit down in the future, and how studies have shown (before covid}: Family members would find comfort from 0ft to 3ft, friends and neighbors would find comfort in spacing 3 ft to 5 ft, and how strangers would feel comfortable 5 feet and beyond. With this study, we are able to understand why COVID doctors have suggested 5 feet distance between people is the minimum. We related this study to living room furniture arrangements and why dining room chairs are spaced a certain distance around a table. We talked a little further about spacing of seating in commercial spaces. For example, how in a doctors office, there may be 20-30 chairs, yet people sit the furthest away from one another. We did an introduction of the elements of design, which we will go further into in Friday's session.
Assignment
Discuss sophia's exsting living room and review how people would chose to sit in the furniture if they were family members verses strangers.

We are going to work on more examples of how people decide to sit in rooms, and go further into reviewing function verses aesthetics, and the elements of design: proportion, balance, texture, etc. We discussed how she could apply these thoughts at the beginning of each project, to include her bedroom design in her new home.

Working on Layout Options for Sophias Classroom
Lesson Outline
Student was absent today. This lesson will be moved to next week's class. Teacher planned on working with student and sketch graph paper, tape measure, and work on options for Sophia's room. Was going to expand based on Sophia's ideas from first lesson last week. Planning to teach student to learn how to adjust furniture plans in different ways to come up with an optimal design solution. Then, once the room layout is determined, instructor is going to walk through writing up a budget for all items in the room. Step three was to begin to talk about paint and/or wallpaper finishes, inspirations for color, furniture selections, and lighting.

Sophia's Room Redesign
Lesson Outline
The core objective:
1. Reviewed Sophia's existing hand sketch of Sophia's preliminary design concepts for the room.
2. Discussed taking measurements of the floor space, and the wall elevations.
3. Review how student should draw an existing floor plan of space showing all the interior furniture and accessories in the space .
4. Create (2) options for floor plans - Plan A and Plan B. We discussed how having a couple options is a good idea in a team environment because often good ideas then evolve into a final plan.
5. Talked about creating a folder on her laptop for each project. In that folder will be photos student likes of the furniture and finishes student is planning. These folders will be the go-to spot for reference.
6. Discussed how next week teacher and student will develop a program and budget for the room.

The ideal paper airplane
Lesson Outline
We continued our investigation into crafting the perfect paper plane. We talked about wing span, weight, size, and weight distribution. Adding things like paper clips to the tips brought certain results, and different paper weights also yielded different results. Construction paper, it was noted by Richard, is just too heavy for our purposes. We designed, crafted, and tested at least 4 planes. His fine motor workout was also great in terms of the folding and creasing, which is already improving.

Motivational Talks/Winding Staircase
Lesson Outline
Because I could see that Hunter was tired this am, we spent part of class listening and watching three motivational speakers; Lou Holtz, Rudy Ruettiger, and Mike Rowe. All three were very captivating and kept Hunter's interest level. How are support beams manufactured? What is a joist hanger? Why are flooring boards glued as well as nailed? What kind of things are shown in working drawings of a house? What is a pocket door? These were just some of the other areas illustrated in today's lesson.
