Andrew walked into his office and said, "Yay! We get to read today!" I love his enthusiasm for reading and learning new things. He conveyed that that book he's reading is really good so far. It's definitely a story of strength and survival!

Andrew narrowed down his topic for his essay that he will begin writing next week. We discussed possible directions he could take with his essay. I can't wait to see the final result!

Andrew has been refining his essay topic, putting in the effort to narrow it down through prewriting exercises. I'm genuinely excited to see the final result, which I'm sure will be fantastic. On top of that, let me just say, Andrew is an amazing kid! He's always eager to explore new concepts, and I have high expectations for his achievements in English class this year. Andrew chose to read The Seven Longest Yards by Chris Norton. It's a story about resilience, perseverance, and hope. Andrew conveyed that he'd like to write about the book when he finishes reading.

I introduced the "This I Believe" essay. Andrew chose some example essays to read/listen to online. Then we brainstormed using sentence stems - I think about things the way I do because __________. Some memorable events in my life are ___________. We will use these ideas to formulate a core belief that he will use as the basis for his essay.

Andrew shared his ongoing experience with writing and reading, detailing his personal journey. Our conversation revolved around the significance of transferring one's ideas from thoughts to paper, prior to delving into the nuances of grammar and structure. Additionally, we discussed dialogue about potential book selections for the upcoming year.

I enjoyed meeting Andrew today! He told me all about Iceland and showed me the beautiful pictures. What an amazing experience! He also shared some of his artwork with me. As an artist myself, I love to see young people inspired to create.
