Discussion regarding viral infection, and why it is so difficult to treat medicinally, due to the host cell being involved in the reproductive cycle of the virus... Types of treatment involve systemic agents which interfere with DNA synthesis, agents which prevent entrance of the virus into the host cell, and agents which inhibit specific enzyme found on viral surfaces... Transcription and translation were explained and the drugs used to interfere with the transcription or translation of the viral RNA introduced.

Lesson Comments
This was probably our last lesson, so I tried to keep it very relevant to what is happening today. Vlad is very interested, and did a review for English of the virus.
Classification of viral infections by duration, severity and extent of infection... Duration includes acute, chronic and slow infections, with definitions and examples of each. The extent of infection includes localized or general, followed by definition and examples of each. The principle of latency was discussed in terms of herpes and hiv virus infections.

Vlad shared some a report he completed on the coronavirus, and we discussed some aspects of the infection
Vlad agreed that he could do a good job writing a research paper on the Coronavirus pandemic. We first brainstormed what a plan for the organization of the paper would look like: A Cause Paper, providing quotes from various sources as to the causes of the pandemic; or an Effect Paper, providing quotes from various sources as to the effects of the pandemic; or a paper that discusses both the causes and the effects. We started with a working title: What Caused the Coronavirus Pandemic? Given the question, the rest of the paper would answer that question. We discussed using terms like: contributing cause, secondary cause, primary cause, root cause, and triggering event. We were after finding two good block quotes, one from the Mayo Clinic website and one from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website. We started the Works Cited page.
Assignment
Vlad to find more sources and more block quotes and work them into his first draft.

Lesson Comments
Vlad took to the assignment with no problem. Still learning the various formats of a research paper. Still having some difficulty locating a word in a paragraph he's written to add punctuation or edit his wording. Interesting: when we were first started talking about the pandemic, Vlad immediately launched into conspiracy theories.
Discussed and edited Vlad's final draft of Comparison and Contrast Paper. Made sure Vlad's paper has all the organizational and developmental items required, and, second, Vlad followed all the required formats governing page setup; title; introductory paragraph; three paragraphs analyzinig Rembrandt painting, followed by two paragraphs citing art critics (using block quoting); transition; three paragraphs analyzing Wright painting, followed by two paragraphs citing art critics; concluding paragraph, and Works Cited page. Vlad to send me a copy of the final product. Next, discussed what is our next paper: the Cause and Effect Paper. Told Vald to look for three handouts re Cause and Effect Paper to read before our session on Wednesday.

Vlad still learning formats required for research paper. Interesting: Vlad not quickly and easily able to locate specific sentences in his own essay. Why he has locating problems is a mystery to me.
Outline and discuss the anatomy of a virus. Include the terms virion, capsid, envelope, DNA and/or RNA genetic material, and protein attachment "spikes". Outline the 6 stages of viral infection and using diagrams and short videos discuss how each stage functions.

Used word documents on shared screens to type out lesson notes as we proceeded, along with diagrams and videos to share. This worked out very well.
Continuation of viral infection. The stages in viral infection and some common viral infections. The classification of viral infection, the effect on host cells and vaccination
