Lesson Topic
Coronavirus/Free Press
Lesson Outline
As Andrew is quite informed about the Coronavirus , we discussed recent developments in the USA and in other countries. We addressed the current situation with the cruise ship docked off the coast of California, and what course of action constitutes the best way to proceed with those on board. In that regard, I informed Andrew that testing kits are being delivered by helicopter ,and we examined who should be quarantined and for how long. We then identified other countries fighting the spread of the virus ,including Iran. Andrew voiced little sympathy for the infected Iranian population, but this led to a discussion of the reliability of the data the public is receiving from countries that do not have a free press. I defined the term "free press" , and Andrew then identified some countries ,like the US, that do have a free press, and we together identified many that do not such as Russia, China ,Iran and Saudi Arabla. In that regard, we reviewed the murder of the Saudi journalist, Jamal Khashoggi. We looked at some pictures of Khashoggi as well as pictures of him walking into the embassy where he met his untimely demise.

Lesson Comments
I was so happy to substitute with Bobby today! We met second period and I don't know who I subbed for, but I hope it's useful that I convey what I learned from Bobby. Bobby was studying Early World History at Oxbridge. He had covered some ancient civilizations such as Mesopotamia and India. He then completed a unit on world religions. Early World History is usually the history standard for 9th graders in the U.S. It is also the least favorite of a majority of students for a number of reasons. From a curricular standpoint, Bobby should resume Early World History. BUT...there is another option! He could actually begin with Modern World History circa the 1700s this semester. He would need to continue Modern World History to completion and that would end for him at the end of first semester in 10th grade, next year. Please, do not hesitate to let me know if I maybe of any further assistance!
