Taylor worked on the next chapters of "Rebecca" and answered comprehension and discussion questions for each one. We also discussed her final assessment and made a plan to prepare a final paper on an aspect of the novel we are reading. She will prepare an outline of her paper during class time, and will write it in an in-class exam style on Friday, June 1.
Today Taylor would have continued her reading and discussion of "Rebecca" and learned about the biographical details of Daphne du Maurier that inform the novel.

Taylor was absent during our 10:45-11:30 session, but I substituted for Craig from 11:00-11:30, which is why this is a 15-minute session summary.
Taylor read chapters 11 and 12 of the novel, asked questions regarding vocabulary from the reading, and answered discussion and comprehension questions about the characters' developing friendships, reader sympathy towards the narrator, and the deteriorating relationship between the protagonist and her husband.
Taylor read and wrote discussion question responses for Chapters 8-10 of the novel "Rebecca." We discussed her answers about the themes and plot developments present in this part of the book, and Taylor completed a chart with quotes and examples that demonstrated the themes of open versus closed spaces, past versus present, and powerful versus vulnerable characters.
Taylor read Chapter 8 of the novel "Rebecca," and she made note of new vocabulary as she was reading. She added several terms to her running vocabulary list, and wrote their definitions.
We discussed the elements of the traditional Gothic novel, and I supplemented my notes with a short video from the British Library online that demonstrated Gothic imagery and architecture accompanying a scholar's discussion of the features of Gothic novels. Taylor took notes on the video and we discussed how some of these elements are at play in "Rebecca," and Taylor made predictions for their potential to develop in the chapters ahead. She then read Chapter 7 and answered some discussion questions.
Taylor finished writing her responses to questions on themes, characterization, and plot for Chapters 1-5 of the novel Rebecca. We discussed her answers and then Taylor read Chapter 6, asking questions as she read.
Taylor finished her response to the Winston Churchill speech that her teacher assigned, and then we returned to the novel "Rebecca." Taylor continued reading, and we discussed some of the introductory information about the characters and their relationships.
