Zach is off to a great start this semester. He's maintaining his organizational system, and is staying on top of all of his classes. He is thoroughly prepared for this paper, and has already gotten a good chunk of it done. We talked about his examples and the themes they relate to, and he seems to have a strong grasp on the material.
Zach has done a great job reading The Book Thief so far. I am truly impressed with his consistent effort and his understanding of the material. He has a paper due on Sept. 9, and we spent a good bit of time talking about preparing to write the paper. With the rest of the session we worked on his group science project.
Zach did a great job with Jane Eyre and should be in good shape. We discussed the overall meaning of the book and its relevance, and we also reviewed the other two books to make sure they're fresh in his memory. We talked about his classes this semester and set goals for the coming year.
Zach has done a great job with this book and actually finished it a week early. As I expected, the more he got used to the language, the easier it was for him to read. He has excellent comprehension and retention skills and should be in great shape for the start of the new year.
Even though he's not enjoying the book, Zach is doing an excellent job of reading it. He's got the details of the story down, but needs to work on connecting those details to the overall development of the story. I get the feeling that he would do much better at this if he liked the book, but that is something we will continue to work on.
Zach actually read more than we agreed, but his disdain for the book is really starting to come through. He might be reading it, but it appears that he's not really understanding and not retaining any of the important information. He has a general idea of what happens, but as we get into deeper character analysis, his lack of details starts to hurt him. This is not normal for him and I think is more a product of not liking the book than any other issue.
Zach did a good job completing the reading, but is having trouble with the language. Usually, his retention of details is much stronger, but I think he's getting lost as he's reading. It is pretty difficult material so that is to be expected. He should improve as he adapts to the style of writing.
Zach finished Calico Joe and for the most part did a great job with it. He has a tendency to project his thoughts and feelings into the book, and consequently sometimes misses the point the author is trying to make. This is not a bad quality, but one he should be aware of. He started Jane Eyre, and as expected, is having a lot of trouble following it. But I'm sure that once he adapts to the writing style he'll be fine.
Zach got a good bit of the reading done this week, but could have done more. I'm concerned about him running of time when he gets back and has to read Jane Eyre. He assured me he will finish it traveling to and from camp. His reading comprehension is excellent and I'm very impressed by his retention of details. He needs to work on his summarizing skills, and looking beyond the obvious for meaning in the story.
Zach had finished the book for our session and I was very pleased with his effort on the reading. He's a solid reader and I am very impressed with his attention to detail and his ability to follow the story
