Human Geography Migration Project/Aids project
Make plan for week
Abbey did a lot of good work today. We went through her take home algebra test. She needs to work on her basic math skills, especially working with fractions and positive/negative numbers. She has two projects for Human Geography, one that was due a week ago (Aids in Africa), and one that is due on Sunday (Migration) We set up the questions she's going to ask tomorrow at riding, and started researching for the Aids project about Kenya. I gave her a list of things she needs to do this week and questions for her teachers. I talked to her about organization and keeping her assignments in a daily planner. We'll work on getting her headed in that direction.
Zach has a research paper on Napoleon coming up, and had already put a good deal of work into it. His research was solid, but his organization and sentence structure need work. For starters, he did not write and outline, which is essential for research papers. His writing style continues to be to casual/conversational. The information he's trying to communicate often gets lost in his attempt to coin a good phrase.
I asked Zach mulitple times if he had any work, and he insisted he did not. I then tried to get him to work on his writing and he was very resistant. He didn't feel like it and consequently, didn't want to do it. With a little nudging I got him on task and we had a good discussion about the Introduction and the best way to go about it. We had a little time to work on his lines and I gave him some tips about the best way to learn and practice them.

Abbey came in with a great attitude and was ready to get to work. We got a lot accomplished and she should be in good shape for tomorrow. We completed her Algebra project and english homework due tomorrow. We also finished the Chapter 2 packet for her test on Friday, and got about halfway through the Chapter 3 packet that is due on Monday. Abbey is a lot of fun to work with and I look forward to working with her more.
Abbey is a great kid who has a lot of work to do. Because she had the deal for English worked out for friday, we spent the day focuing on completing all of her outstanding assignments. We got every thing done and Abbey did a very good job of staying focused and putting in a good effort.
Zach did a lot of work on his paper, but we still had to go through and clean it up a bit. It's a solid effort and we'll continue to work on his writing.
Zach put a lot of effort into the paper and did a great job following the outline we set up last week. His writing is a little awkward in that he has trouble with his verb tenses and is much too wordy. He keeps trying to write something alternative and witty, when he should be focusing on being more direct and concise.
Anthem paper. Zach finally agreed to work on his writing with me. He had a beginning outline for his Anthem paper, but it didn't follow the prompt. Zach goes out of his way to be alternative, both in what he writes and how he writes it. It makes sense that his grade is low as it appears that he doesn't like to follow the assignment. Also, rather than making concise and direct statements, he likes to turn an original phrase. While these are two qualities I would applaud in a college student, it's not what Benjamin is looking for. We'll continue to work on it.

Discuss Anthem, plan for week, discuss script. Zach continues to be in great shape. He's staying on top of all his assignments, and his understanding of the material he's reading is excellent.

Not only did Zach not have anything to work on, he didn't even bring any books with him. We talked about his next reading for english and made plans for the future.
