Joe had a great first day. He was very attentive and well behaved. His reading/comprehension skills are very well developed, but he clearly needs to work on math. It's not that he can't solve the problems, but he has a tremendous block and is convinced he simply can't do it. I gave him his first introductory lesson on chess and he picked up the rules very quickly. Great first day.
Laila did a great job with today's exercise. Her reading comprehension is quite good, and she did a great job of applying what she read to a larger conversation. I thought she was very sociable and energetic and I look forward to working with her.

Cameron had 4 math assignments to make up. The first two were on basic geometry, which he's pretty solid with, and the others were on simplifying and solving equations. He's had some trouble with these, but definitely seemed to get the hang of it by the end.
Jordan passed FCAT! Read two passages in 'Take Flight' and did comprehension worksheet on each one. Multiplication quiz on 2's-4's. Introduced fives through 7 and practiced on multiplication.com.
Cameron has been having trouble factoring binomials and trinomials, so we spent today going over that material and making sure he gets it. I asked him about upcoming tests, and he says he's ready for math, which is a random test from the district, and english, which is an essay that he does not know the topic. He seems like he's in good shape.
Given that we don't know what will be on Cameron's placement test, I decided to do some generic vocabulary and reading comprehension skills. I think Cameron will do fine on the test.
Cameron is in pretty good shape in terms of math. He had some trouble with the simplifying and solving of equations, but only because he kept mixing up the positive and negative numbers. Finally, after 6 months, I think I've finally convinced him to write out each step of the problem! By the end of the class he was breezing through the problems.
