Today, Sam and I read about celebrations (culture). I explained different events, formal or informal mark a young person's transition from childhood to adulthood depending on the culture. What are they called and when do they occur? How are they celebrated? We read about Quinceanera a Latin American tradition when you turn 15 with family and friends. Sam told me about a celebration according to Jewish law, when Jewish boys become 13 years old, they become accountable for their actions and become a Bar Mitzvah. A girl becomes a Bat Mitzvah at the age of 12 according to Orthodox and Conservative Jews, and at the age of 13 according to Reform Jews. She drew information about this celebration(what- when- where- how). Then Sam and I spoke about describing family and asking/telling ages. Sam read aloud Monica's description of her family (from textbook page 90). Using recycled vocabulary -( mother, parents, son, siblings, grandparents, uncle and more). Sam wrote several examples telling the ages of the people.
Define a compound event. Outline the difference between finding the probability of one event AND another and one event OR another. The AND another involves finding P(event A & event B) while OR involves finding P(event A) + P (event B). P is the probability. A few problem examples will be given and the answers evaluated. Finding the Probability when 2 events are mutually exclusive will be discussed with the formula given as P(A) + P(B) - P(A+B). A few examples of this type will be given.
Today, Sam and I read aloud "Celebrations in Latin America" (textbook pages 86, 87). October 12 "Dia de la raza" is about celebrating diversity. November 1 "Dia de los Muertos" is about honoring important people who passed away. People bring flowers to their graves. December 31st is about celebrating the new year. It is important to understand and learn about culture. I asked Sam about her community and some events they celebrate.
I continued to use the chapter test from the textbook to review rational functions with Samantha. We worked on addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of rational functions along with simplification of rational functions and complex fractions. There was no assignment.

Lesson Comments
Samantha was Skyping the class today. After some technical glitches, the lesson went well and we covered a lot of problems.
Outline how to compute the % increase and% decrease using examples of sales of lipstick in your cosmetic business. Once the formula is learned, determine if the increase and/or decrease will be the same if the amount of increase or decrease is the same. Point out that they are showing different due to their base amounts being different in the calculations. After solving the problems from the textbook, review a few problems dealing with probability from last week as a review.

Lesson Comments
Samantha skyped this session. She worked hard on the problems and was able to pick up the theory and practical applications
I worked with Samantha to review selected problems involving rational functions. Types of problems included simplifying rational functions, multiplying, dividing, adding, and subtracting rational functions, finding points on the graphs where there are holes or asymptotes, and simplifying complex fractions. We worked through some chapter review and chapter test problems in our review. There was no assignment.

Lesson Comments
Samantha is still suffering from a disruptive home life which keeps her from doing her best in school.
Sam and I continued our study of the novel. We annotated for understanding and to find literary devices used by the author. We discussed the several metaphors used and the reason for their use. We discussed how to write the double journal entries for the pages that are read each day. We continued our discussion of the Sadlier vocabulary book. We are currently working on Unit 2. We are making flash cards for the words. Then we practice applying the difficult vocabulary in the exercises provided.
Assignment
Double journal entries and completion of the creation of the flash cards
