Finding Centers of Dilation
Lesson Outline
We looked at images and their dilations today, and Sam was asked to find what the center of dilation is when given several points. She learned that the vertices of the original shape, the dilated shape, and the center of dilation must all line up, which is how we test for the center.
Sam also had a chance to go back and redo previous Khan Academy exercises for a higher grade. She found that, as she reviewed them again, she understood them and realized that she was learning!

Lesson Comments
Judie, Sam and I honestly spent the first part of our session talking. She had been on the phone with Anthony's mom prior to our session, and was upset about things that were going on at home. She was talking about going back to NJ to get away from her dad. I listened and asked her questions, and encouraged her to stay here and get her diploma. She talked to Nicole during lunch (and perhaps you, too?), and was in a much better frame of mind for learning after that.
This reminds me a bit of Hunter.....

Dilations around centers other than origin
Lesson Outline
Today we looked at how to dilate a figure around a point that is not the origin. I showed Sam how we need to see what the vertical and horizontal distances each vertex is from the center of dilation. We then multiply those distances by the scale factor to give us the new distances to plot. Sam worked several questions.

Close Reading / Analysis
Lesson Outline
Sam spent this time working on a substantive paragraph in The Lord of the Flies, practicing analysis with close reading. The lesson involved deep thinking about various words, phrases, and the author's purpose in their juxtaposition one to another. Literary devices were discovered and their use and purpose discussed. The imagery and contrasts, as well as sensory details and nuances behind the word choices were illumined as Sam considered each part and then the whole.

Learning a language with purpose - Verb tener
Lesson Outline
Today, Sam and I watched a short video about learning a language with purpose(warm up activity) . In this video Bill Gates sits down with Washington State Teacher of the Year and 2018 National Teacher of the Year, Mandy Manning from Ferris High’s Newcomer Center in Spokane. Mandy teaches at Ferris High School’s Newcomer Center, which was created in 1997 specifically to help immigrant and refugee students make the transition to living in the U.S. I’ve been going to Spokane for years to visit relatives there, so I know a bit about the city, but I was surprised to learn about the diversity of the student population. Mandy told me 77 different languages are spoken in the district. It’s not unusual for her to have a class with 12 students who speak eight different languages. After watching this video we spoke about the importance of learning languages and helping others(Inspiration is a big part of creating new ideas intended to help every human being succeed). We worked in our textbook on the "verb tener" saying what you have. The"verb tener" is also used to talk about the age of a person. Sam wrote several examples using the verb tener. Also, she wrote about her family discussing the age of her mom, dad, fiance, grandparents, and uncle.

cosmetics-intor
Lesson Outline
Having finished the anatomy and physiology of the skin, we are beginning a study of what would follow naturally, cosmetics. A series of questions led Sam to a working definition of cosmetics: A substance used to enhance or alter the appearance. Samantha outlined areas where this enhancement or alteration would most likely be used, such as the face, hair and lips. Chemical compounds or mixtures of compounds, all of which we have studied previously... Their derivation, either from natural sources or synthesis was discussed, including the fact that synthetic or artificial does not mean toxic or bad. The breakdown of the term cosmetics into their common categories was started.

LORD OF THE FLIES
Lesson Outline
Sam and I continued our study of the novel. We read chapter 10 stopping to annotate for meaning. We also defined vocabulary that we didn't know by using context clues. We then read an analysis of the chapter from Book Rags. We discussed the author's purpose and the symbolism he employs.
