Adding and subtracting rational functions and simplifying complex numbers
Lesson Outline
The plan was to show Samantha how to add or subtract two rational functions by adjusting their denominators to be the same. This would require factoring the denominators and multiplying both the numerators and denominators by the same factors. When the denominators were the same, we would combine the numerators.
Time permitting, we would also use a similar strategy to simplify complex fractions. Since Samantha wasn't present for class, I will present the lesson again the next time I teach her.

Script / Listening/ Speaking/ Reading skills - Talent show (Director Assistant)

Today, Sam had the opportunity to practice Spanish skills (Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking) by listening to the actors (students). (Baylie/Narrator, Marcos/Lion, Yanuell/Jaguar, Bobby/Bear, Vlad/Eagle, Christopher/superhero, Arianna/Bee practiced together and performed live (theatrical performance). Sam is going to help all the “Spanish play cast” during the Talent show. Today, Sam assisted facilitating the rehearsal process, taking notes, and helping the entire Rehearsal production process. Sam shared interesting comments in order to improve acting performance. We discussed “A Great play” is never the result of a single individual's efforts. It always involves the dedicated contributions from a number of people behind the scenes (from the actor on the stage to the person who made the t-shirts /costumes). The assistant director, for one, must be prepared to perform a variety of tasks, in both the artistic and technical realm. Sam is the ideal assistant.

I guided Samantha through the steps involved in simplification, multiplication, and division of rational functions. I emphasized that we also have to include restrictions on the domains to avoid division by zero. There was no assignment.

Lesson Outline
Samantha is about to conclude reading "Lord of the Flies." She gave some predictions as to how she thinks the book will end. I asked Samantha what she thinks the main message is in the book because it is a classic message. Sam provided excellent literal meanings about the plot and characters of the story. We discussed the universal message behind the book. This is a story that has a human, societal and political message that is timeless. We discussed these messages and Sam said that although she finds the text material dry to read, she does appreciate the thematic, timeless message(s) of the book. Sam will complete reading the remainder of the book for homework.

Test on exponential and logarithmic equations
Lesson Outline
Samantha took the test on logarithmic functions and exponential equations. The test consisted of conversion between exponential and logarithmic representations of various expressions. There were also problems evaluating common logarithms, natural logarithms, and logarithms with different bases. The test included exponential equations which had to be solved logarithmically. Samantha scored a 100% perfect score. There was no assignment.

We will separate the types of cosmetics intended for external use into: Face-skin lotion and cream, lipstick, eye and facial makeup;
Body-deodorants, lotions, powders, perfumes, body butters; Hand and nail-polish, sanitizer; Hair-coloring, sprays, gels.We will then discuss specific external cosmetic compounds such as Primers, used to reduce pore size, prolong makeup use, and allow for smoother application of makeup. The chemistry of the primers will then be covered. The presence of antioxidants such as vit A,C, and E;ingredients like grape seed extract and green tea extract, cyclometicone and dimethicone along with mica and silica.

Today, Sam and I read the novel "El viaje de su vida". Carlos is excited to go on his first cruise with his family. While on the cruise, he witnesses a crime that turns him from a tourist to being engrossed in solving a mystery. His bold actions eventually lead him to the top of an ancient Mayan ruin where his life is in great danger. Sam read aloud and we spoke about the novel.
