Sam works with this math quite easily. She can be very proficient at it and could finish the whole text if only she showed up on time. When she is in class, she is great.

TUESDAYS WITH MORRIE and Seidler vocabulary/Career Narrative
Lesson Outline
Sam had not completed her assignment, so she needed to finish her double journal entries. She also needed to finish the creation of her vocabulary study cards. She had not completed her research for the Career Narrative, so she also did that. Then we discussed the creation of her career narrative. We also continued our study of the novel. We read and stopped to discuss her double journal entries along with stopping to annotate for understanding and meaning. Sam will draft her career narrative and continue writing her double journal entries.

Test on rational functions
Lesson Outline
I gave Samantha her test on rational functions. She was allowed to use her notes and practice test as well as her textbook. The test included topics such as finding the points of discontinuity, adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing, and simplifying rational functions. There were also problems on simplifying complex fractions and solving equations with rational functions. Samantha didn't finish the test so we will resume the test the next time I teach her. There was no assignment.

independent and dependent probabilities
Lesson Outline
define an independent event as one where the outcome on one event does not affect the outcome of a second event. Example would be drawing a card from a deck of 52, and then replacing the card back. The total number of outcomes does not change with each subsequent draw. Problem: a bag is filled with3 white, 2 yellow, 3 green, and 4 red marbles. A marble is withdrawn from the bag and then replaced and a second marble withdrawn. What is the probability of #1 being red and #2 being white? ( probability of event A THEN event B. The probability of each is determined individually , then each of the independent events are multiplied together to arrive at the probability of event A then B. 3-4 problems will be solved from the textbook to reinforce the method.

Samantha arrived at the end of the allotted class time. This lesson will be given in the afternoon session.

Lesson Topic
Practice Test on Rational Functions.
Lesson Outline
I worked with Samantha to go over problems with rational functions. We worked on more problems in complex fractions. I showed her how to solve equations with rational functions by getting common denominators and working with the numerators. After solving the problems, I showed her how to check the solutions by substituting them into the original equation. There was no assignment.

Lesson Topic
compound events, mutually exclusive and not exclusive
Lesson Outline
Define a compound event. Indicate the 2 major types; finding the probability of one event AND another, and finding the probability of one event OR another. From example problems, derive the probability formula for each one. Using examples of 52 cards in a deck, state and then work problems to determine probability when the probabilities are not mutually exclusive, like drawing a club or a jack from a deck.

Practice Test Rational Functions
Lesson Outline
I worked with Samantha to do problems simplifying complex fractions and solving equations with rational functions. I showed her how to obtain common denominators in both the upper and lower fractional functions. Then I showed her how multiplying the upper expression and lower one by the reciprocal of the lower expression would cancel the entire lower part of the complex fraction. I also showed her one example of how to solve equations with rational functions by first getting all terms to have the same denominator. After that, the denominators of all terms would be canceled and the numerators would be solved. After arriving at a solution, I showed Samantha that all solutions must be substituted into the original equation to see if they form a true statement. There was no assignment.

TUESDAYS WITH MORRIE and Career Narrative
Lesson Outline
Sam and I continued our study of the novel. We read several chapters of the novel stopping to discuss theme. We also talked about writing the double journal entries, and what quotes would be good to use. We discussed the Career Narrative. Sam has not completed her research for the Career Narrative, and she needs to do that so we can begin writing. She also needs to complete her vocabulary study cards and her double journal entries.
