Algebra II Honors
Session Date
Lesson Topic
Review of Rational Exponents and Radical Functions
Lesson Outline
I worked with Matthew to review evaluation of expressions with rational exponents or radical signs. We then found the inverse functions of given functions and solved equations containing radicals or rational exponents. We solved some problems from the text book test used as review material. There was no assignment.

Lesson Topic
Inverse trigonometric funtions
Lesson Outline
I instructed Joshua to provide the inverse trigonometric functions for various angles in diagrams. We then worked some practice problems with the same set of skills. Joshua worked on programming his calculator to solve the simpler problems. There was no assignment.

Lesson Topic
Chapter Review on Rational Exponents and Rational Functions
Lesson Outline
Matthew and I worked some additional problems with equations that had rational exponents involved. We then began the chapter review with some examples of the main properties of rational exponents and radical functions. This was followed by exercises simplifying numbers raised to rational powers. There was no assignment.

Lesson Topic
Finding inverse trigonometric functions
Lesson Outline
I showed Joshua how the ranges of both the cosine and sine fuctions were restricted to give the unique values to the inverse function. We then worked out what values of x, y, and r would yield the correct trigonometric functional value. I showed him several examples of the technique being used and then we did some guided practice. There was no assignment.

Lesson Comments
Joshua was not very cooperative and we made very little progress. He needs to get more serious about his math or he could wind up not completing the course at year's end.

Lesson Topic
Solving equations with rational exponents
Lesson Outline
I worked with Matthew to show the approach to solving equations with rational exponents. We used the reverse order of operations to isolate the expression with the rational exponent. Then we raised both sides of the equation to the reciprocal power of the exponent to which the original expression was raised. After the calculation was done the expression was the variable set equal to the answer. There was no assignment.

I had trouble connecting to Matthew which he claimed was a connection problem, but either way, he was only available during the first session for 15 minutes. While online, he was attentive and answered questions as well as he could.

Lesson Topic
Solving equations with rational exponents and extraneous roots
Lesson Outline
The plan was to continue to work on solving equations with radicals or rational exponents and extraneous roots. We were going to solve both square root and cube root problems. Unfortunately, Matthew was not present and could not receive either in-person or virtual instruction. There was no assignment.

Lesson Topic
Trigonometric and inverse functions of various reference angles of positive and negative angeles
Lesson Outline
I instructed Joshua to provide selected trigonometric functions of various angles expressed in radians and degrees. We then started to find the inverse trigonometric functions of various angles. I pointed out that these functions were only defined on certain domains. There was no assignment.

Lesson Topic
Reference angles of both.positive and negative angles in degrees and radians
Lesson Outline
I provided problems for Joshua to calculate the answers involving the reference angles for positive and negative angles expressed in degrees and radian measure. We then began to calculate different trigonometric functions of angles that required reference angles first. There was no assignment.

Lesson Topic
Solving equations with rational exponents and extraneous roots
Lesson Outline
I went through an example of solving an equation with a rational exponent with Matthew. We then solved an equation with a radical on one side and checked for extraneous roots. When we substituted the roots, we found that one of them did not make a true statement. There was no assignment.

Trigonometric functions on the axes and reference angles of positive and negative angeles
Lesson Outline
I showed Joshua more angles which were on the positive or negative x and y axes. I then used the unit circle to help him derive the trigonometric functions. When we set up the correct angles, Joshua found all six functions for each angle. There was no assignment.
