Math – Kelcy began to learn about the new topics in Lesson 14 which involves finding the area of a plane figure. He practiced finding the perimeter and area of squares and rectangles.
Science – We checked our science experiment to determine a plant’s ability to absorb water. After the flowers sat in the water overnight we observed a color change to the petals of its flowers. This proved that the water that is absorbed at the roots travels from the stem out to the leaves and flowers. We left some of the flowers to dry out overnight in order for them to absorb more color today. Then Kelcy began a project to learn about Earth’s atmosphere. He discovered the different gases that make up air. These gases are held close to Earth’s surface by gravity forming a type of blanket around the planet.
We opened with a light dynamic stretch to loosen the muscles, followed by a light dynamic warmup to get the blood flowing. Kip and I worked on batting practice. I threw an array of different pitches at him and let him try his best to get used to hitting them all.
Today we looked at how to win a stalemate. We looked at different chess attacks and defensive plays. We ended changing the rules to make for a more difficult match.
Kip and I played “Math Dash: a game of Multiplication and Division”. This is a fast acting game of skill and strategy to answer problems and race to the end.
Math – Kelcy took the Unit 2 Assessment and did extremely well. He easily identified missing numbers in division equations and multiplication fact families. He is extremely proficient on using the distributive property to solve multiplication problems. He is also extremely capable of identifying patterns in tables of numbers.
Science – Kelcy learned that the closest layer in Earth’s atmosphere is where weather occurs and the next layer is where planes and weather balloons fly. Above this layer meteors burn up in the atmosphere protecting the Earth and above that the space shuttle orbits the Earth. The last layer is where satellites orbit. Then we set up a hands-on experiment called “color a carnation” that was in his science book. We purchased carnations from a florist and put half of them in cups with several drops of food coloring. We hope to see how water is dispersed in plants.
Kip and I began our session with Kip completing fifteen minutes of iReady. Kip then glued a picture of Charlie Sifford to his poster for 'Black History Month'. Kip then completed a grammar activity, focusing on adjectives and nouns, determining if the adjective is describing how many or what kind. We took turns reading aloud, "Eat This Spoon" - what a cool story about edible spoons! Kip then answered multiple choice questions and completed a short response on cause and effect pertaining to the story. We ended our session with submitting our work onto google classroom.

Lesson Comments
Kip is so fun to work with! He is a hard-worker with very little pushing.
I began with a phonological awareness exercise followed by a review of the sound deck with visual, auditory, and blending drills. Graphemes included ee, g, ir, oo, ph, ea, ur, ai, er, ay. I revisited the the drop-e and doubling spelling rules, dictating example words. Kip demonstrated mastery. I dictated five irregular words and taught "all" as a new irregular word. I dictated a sentence for Kip to write and edit using the CAPS mnemonic (capitalization, appearance, punctuation, spelling.) To practice fluency and comprehension, we co-read two chapters of the novel.
Kip and I began our session with Kip completing fifteen minutes of iReady. Together, we read aloud a reading, "Space Food". Following the reading, we filled out a chart focusing on cause and effect and completed a short response on sequencing. The remainder of our session consisted of a 'Black History Month' project. Kip chose to do his project on Charlie Sifford (the first African American to play full-time on the PGA Tour).
Math – We reviewed problems similar to the study guide from yesterday and worked on new problems. Kelcy practiced several multiplication and division problems as well as fact families, the distributive property, and number patterns in charts for the test on Unit 2 tomorrow.
Science – Kelcy was able to match definitions with vocabulary words from Unit 2. Then he began to study the layers in Earth’s atmosphere. He learned that when we talk about the sky we are talking about Earth’s atmosphere which includes the air we breathe, our weather, and the things we use to move through the sky up to 6 miles above the ground.
Kip and I began our session with fifteen minutes of iReady. I read aloud a reading, "Describing Connections Between Sentences and Paragraphs". Following the reading, together, we completed a chart filling in cause & effect and sequencing. Kip completed a grammar activity focusing on main verbs and helping verbs to review for his grammar test in the future. We ended our session with completing our religion reading on Lent.
